an explanation

O.K.
Lets have an understanding! I was responding to general comments, about being a lifetime addict... Never touched drugs before the ten years of no meth, or after. YES i went to a great detox center ant the cost of 28,000 dollars, which I highly encourage if one can afford it, but I never labeled myself an addict... They sure wanted to though... Funny huh? I never saw a group, therapist, or aa meeting for the next ten years. After a major accident, having my neck re plated and put back together,.. spine re formed and fused, I was introdused ti opiates... it was the only thing to take the near shock inducng pain I was in. These drugs serve a purpous.. and there is no reason for anyone to be in pain...am I an addict now NO, n I in denial NO. do I recogonize a problem,...yes, and it took about 3 months of no pain to realize that there is no more logical reason as to why I am still taking this drug..

I am 23 hours into withdrawls, and it sucks, but I will get through this. Will I ever use agan... well I guess if I require another life saving surgery that causes intense pain sure, but it does not make me an addict because I am going through withdrawls. it means that powerful drugs have powerful effects,... my legitimate reason for use turned to unable to withdrawal... for 3 extra months. Now however I have the timae to do so, and I am

I understand what you're saying. There is such a thing as having an addiction but not being an addict. BUT...once you've had an addiction, you have to be very careful how you deal with it.
The changes to you both physically and mentally leave you open to being an addict. So...like i said, be aware of the possibility.

I knew a fellow once who ended up in bed with a guy and said he considered himself straight, it was an anomaly.
The third time it happened, however, he decided he may have to reconsider his attitude about his heterosexuality. :)

when you used the meth was that prescribed from a dr? due to a life saving surgey? were you an addict then? or just had a few problems? i am learning alot here so that is why i am asking.....i was addicted to ALL opiates  although it started with back problems that were legit which led to 2 major back surgeries and i just chose to stay on them an extra long time and i added an extra dose or 2 or 3 hey sometimes i stoled them sometimes i paid for them sometimes i came up with a crazy story to get them i  consider myself an addict with some major problems.....

No problem. Some times it's good to get the definitions straight...that way we don't spend 5 hours arguing the same point but with different words :-)

I never used anymore medication than I was supposed to for the entire 2 1/2-3 yrs I was on Tramadol; I always ate something before taking them, otherwise I'd get sick as hell, I didn't chew them up---- I may not be addicted to Tramadol, but my body build a horrifying dependence on the dumb things that it took a week to recover from not taking them anymore...
HOWEVER, I'm addicted to other things, which makes me an addict--- I'm addicted to alcohol (Was very addicted.. didn't drink much, but when I DID drink-- LOOK OUT!); I also have a 'shopping' addiction (of course spending my OWN money, never anyone else's) but I took control over THAT by working steps; I'm addicted to perfection.. people hate that about me! I'm also addicted to my computer!
Most of us Americans (and everyone else in this world) have some degree of Addictive personality.. But, some are different- Big difference between physical dependence and addiction- but it CAN lead to addiction if you really enjoying the 'high'.. However, I didn't.. I felt absolutely NOTHING (maybe a stable mood for the most part) but all I felt was a sick stomach, liver starting to shut down on me, kidneys hurting like hell, bowels out of order, etc etc..
the point is, No, I don't think you were addicted to the pills, but our bodies built such a dependence, that their (our bodies) are literally signaling to our brains that we NEED more, otherwise we can't function.. That can be part of addiction, but it depends on how you used it and for what purpose..
If we admit our lives have become unmanageable, then yes- we are addicts.. If we can actually say that medicine/drugs controlled our lives, way of thinking, spending loads of cash, etc etc, then yes- we are addicted..
Only you can determine that yourself, pretty much..

Hi GG,

Just want to say thank you for the best explaination to date of dependency vs. addiction and/or abuse. Often people are confused about just what is going on with their addictions, and this really helped me to understand my owm issues as well as others.

let's get our definitions straight:

Dependency is the actual physical changes to your body which cause withdrawal. Addiction is the BEHAVIOR of taking the drugs to get high, not as prescribed, and when not needed for clinical reasons. It is the un-manageable behaviors associated with lack of control.

so...can you honestly say you do not take the pills to get high...but rather for managing pain? You haven't increased your dose? take them on an empty stomach to get more of a buzz? Do you chew them?
If you can honestly say 'no'...then perhaps you are not an addict but rather are physically dependent.  I can't say one way or the other because I don't know the answers to these questions.
