Need advice to kick habit

Hi everyone,
I have had 2 hernia surgeries the past 12 months and was given vicodin for the pain when discharged from hospital. After i healed from the surgeries i am now addicted to the vicodin and after my doctor would not prescribe any more pain meds I rotate from vicodin to percocet...whatever I can buy.I honestly am not in pain anymore from the surgeries but find it impossible to get off the vicodin and percocet because of the fear and the symptoms of withdrawl.I ran out of pills one time for a couple days and found it to be hell....got very achy...sweat like a pig...aggitated....my breathing was fast and heavy,of course like a idiot I found another "source" to get them and went right back on them just not to deal with the hell...i feel ashamed because i was weak minded not to stay off them and just deal with the withdrawl.I absoulutely do not take them to get high.I stay on them so I wont have to suffer from the withdrawl AND of course they are nice if you really do physically feel bad due to a "real" illness or if you get hurt but i would say I stay on them 95% for the reason of not dealing with the suffering from withdrawl and of course buying them is killing me financially.I almost feel like a druggy because I always count them....make sure i have enough and have even stole some from my son and or wife when they had them for REAL ailments.I feel ashamed, embarassed and a idiot for getting hooked on them...if you dont feel good or hurting it is sooooo easy to take these "magic" pills and feel better imediately.I tried 2 times to get off them and go cold turkey but only lasted 2 days...what a joke!  Can anyone tell me if it is better to go cold turkey and deal with it? I tried doing one thing someone suggested  and tapered off my dosage but of course my mind said "hey taking 1 and a half doesnt make you feel as good as taking your usual 2  so lets go back to 2.As far as how many I take a day?   total...about 10-12 a day  vicodin 5/500 mg   or percocet 325 mg.I am so ashamed and pissed at myself...I have been taking these about 2 years.PLEEEEEEEEEEASE HELP!

How about a cigarette then?     Joking with you... We all pick our poison and sometimes in multiples!!  You gotta laugh...

My best advice is to get ready:go shopping, prepare the house(clean, cook,do laundry),get some videos,books,mags,etc... Being prepared is HUGE!!

You'll need to drink A LOT of fluids, eat good food, get some vits,Immodium,OTC sleep med,(Alteril is very good), tonic water to drink for the restless legs, epsom salts to put in a hot bath. I'll explain the stuff later on but just stock up on these things for now.

A good mindset is the most important thing.  You can do this!!  You're a bigboy, right?? LOL!!

Thanks Vicki,
I have actually "burned my bridges" for my sources of these pills so I intentionally have no place to buy them....but of course like a idiot I kept 1 source.I know I need to dump everyone so I dont have anyway of getting them anymore.I am recently divorced so it is just me and my son at home...which makes it harder BUT I know I need to make up my mind and just do it.When I did stop taking them for a WHOLE 2 DAYS ! LOL I had the sweats, achyness,no energy and had diarhea.I did not have restless legs BUT did have a VERY hard time sleeping.Tossing turning tossing turning....maybe got a couple of hours of sleep...maybe.I also noticed my breathing was weird...like fast paced and like a goof I gave in and popped 2 pills and WHALAAA I felt "better"....what a ******* I am.God I hate this and want to know something? I do not smoke or drink and this pill ******** has a hold on me!!!!

Hi there!  I'll suggest this: First, tell your family/wife. You're going to need a lot of support for this. Then just go cold turkey and don't take anymore. Call your contacts and quit them!
Prepare for a detox and get in touch with your doctor for medical help. You need to do this or it will be horrible for you and your family!!

We can help you, suggest different things to help with symptoms but you just have to make up your mind that it's over!  I think you know you're an addict. It doesn't define you. It's just time to stop this!
