I think its a great idea! I did the same thing with my children b/c I didn't want them to be able to use the excuse, "I didn't know". I'm telling them and they watched me detox which was horrible but I wanted them to see just how bad it could be. Not saying that this theory is going to work fully b/c I do have 2 of my 4 children that use recreational drugs and alcohol, but they will be aware of what can happen!
I did the same with my 9 and 11 year old when I detoxed off of pills.. It's a very smart idea.. Rx pills are running rampant in both High Schools and Collages now and I've even heard of them starting to creep into the Middle Schools... Education is key to this fight and I'm a strong believer in the earlier the better... Our nation was very successful with the grass roots anti smoking campaign they instituted recently I hope they do something similar with prescription drugs.. My wife is a principle of a high school and they sadly lose at least one child a year to pills... They do educate on the dangers of prescription drugs but she agrees it is not enough and is working on a curriculum to improve it's current status but she also said that in the past 5 yrs or so she is seeing a much higher volume of children coming into high school already using a gateway drug, experimenting with harder drugs, or addicted to a drug... Point being that the education process must begin at a young age... I personally didn't want to take a chance especially based on my experience so I took the opportunity to show them first hand..
It is an excellent idea. With what is going on I our school now a days with drugs and kids taking their parents prescriptions, they have to know. Especially your 15 yr old who is that age. Don't take pills with your friends vie the pill parties they have. It is scary.
The more they know now, the more the will hopefully think if they are in a situation.
My 10 & 12 year olds were 8 & 10 when I detoxed. We talk very openly. My kids do not think of heroin and other opiates as any different. Being my drug of choice was methadone, they even know how much worse that is than heroin, as far as getting off it. We have a game, the kids point out what drugs people in the street are on. They know amphetamine, alcohol, and opiates pretty well now, so those images are there when drugs are offered. They just say, "that's too bad, they don't know what they are doing." I shared every part of my insanity with them too, I am glad you are taking this action. I think it is important to explain the difference in non-addicts using meds, but are still dependent and then what an addict is. I'd love to hear how they respond. At their age, dirk probably nailed it, "mom, we know, we know, they sell prescriptions in school." Give them the gory details, I'll share my story leading up to near death if they need or want to hear it. I never partied on prescriptions, I believed I took them to work and be a good parent, but had multiple respiratory arrests by the end of my good intentions. We can't even tell it is happening to us, at least at first. Good for you mama, tell it like it is.
pry a good idea, they probably already know ppl abusing them, sad but true opiates are main stream drugs for kids nowadays......everything comes and goes and pills are IN right now!!!!
