So happy to be alive!

Well God's given me another day...I'm on so many meds that I'm either wide awake or passed out. At the moment I'm on Morphine, Percocet, Decadrone, Keppra, Zofran, and I'm pretty sure there's something else. :P I tried uploading pics all day yesterday, but it's not letting me on this site. I'll try again later.

Dr said yesterday I should probably be out by Monday..so we'll see! I'm totally exhausted when I'm up.

I really thought I posted on here the other day, but can't find it so I guess I forget?

Welcome back! Glad you made it to the *other side* so to speak...

I think the pics have size limits so it may be that, if you used a camera, the settings were so that they are too many MB? That sometimes happens or the site is being flakey.

Take it easy and the woozy feeling passes - a lot of that is the medications (gee, was that in another post???) so once you get off the meds, you will feel more of yourself. Oh and um, fiber.

Continue on the road to wellness! Woohoo!

I'm too weak to walk on my own and my eye is blurry from the swelling by my optic nerve...other than that I feel very very lucky!

It's my mom's camera so I'm sure it's her settings on there.

YAY-
I want to hear every gory detail once you are home and all snug with your family and feel up to it. REST REST REST when ever you can right now. You've got to take advantage of those free moments in between everything medical and family.
If you are up to a few quick questions
-Did you get DI?
-Only one eye is blurry right?

Isn't it funny how we all want the gory details? I still have morbid fascinations with my post surgical photos.

Be very careful. It is normal to have these feelings of euphoria. You're alive! You can see! The decadron will make you feel like superwoman, and you may feel like you can handle more than you should. It's almost like a little gift to us after being through he1l. But don't overdo it. Rest as much as you can. Rest to the point where you feel bored and antsy, and then rest some more. Try to walk when you have the energy, and if you are not walking well yet, you can ask them to keep those cuffs on your legs to keep the circulation. They were willing to remove them once i was in ICU but I actually found them to be soothing, and I liked knowing that they made me less likely to get a clot.

I can't tell you how happy I am to hear you have such a positive outcome. The swelling should improve in the next few weeks.

here's my caring bridge page...I can't get pics up on there either, but I've changed the settings on my camera so that should change soon. I'm going to try to get my bro to change the size of my other pics too.

No DI yet..and only my right eye is blurry which is the one that was messed up anyways. It's super bloodshot too.

Okay...you all should know how fuzzy I am..but I don't think I've asked about HIGH blood sugars? Mine got up to 179 tonight, but is normally low. They said it's from the steroids but I'm not liking the insulin..PLUS I have thrush :P

ALL that is from the steroids - they do a number on the body and suppress the immune system. Get plain yogurt (not anything with sugar) and add your own nuts and fruit to control the sugars. I tend to hate the *feel* of the cheap plain yogurt and balk at the cost of the lovely greek yogurt, so I take the cheap stuff, dump it in a strainer lined with a 12 cup paper coffee filter and let it sit in the fridge for a few hours - viola - pseudo greek yogurt! Nice and thick. Add honey - you are golden (but not much with those sugar numbers). The yogurt will help with the thrush.
The sugars will go down after the roids - but in the mean time - just cut out anything  you can but sadly our foods have a lot of hidden sugar in them. Eat smaller, more frequent meals to prevent glucose spikes and make sure you get protein in every meal to balance carbs.

I'm not able to eat much at all..maybe got a cup of food down yesterday. Part of it is that he went through my jaw muscle and it only opens about an inch..but mainly just not hungry..SUPER STRANGE for me!

The NP from the practice came by and said I won't be going home today. I'm soo exhausted.

The jaw muscle was the worst! So much pain, and such limited range of motion. The other forum I am on has a list of great exercises that helped tremendously. I'll try to get them here in the next day.  At 2 months post op my jaw was still very tight (couldn't even open 2 fingers wide, but by 3 and 4 months it was almost back to normal.

I almost made it through the day with no morphine...just broke down though. sugars were up to 170 again and she's starting to monitor me for the SIADH now becuase I'm super thirsty.

I've had a really tough day today...hoping to have a much much better one tomorrow!

DI or SIADH? Both suck - but the treatments differ... I had NO appetite as well after some surgeries - some I was ok, some - zero. I would eat one spoon of soup and be full for a day. I finally got ensure just to get some vitamins. But I did not eat. That lasted actually a while. I used slim fast too just because it tasted better and was cheaper. I am so cheap lol...

Try to relax a bit... too bad you have to stay NO sleep in a hospital... that was the worst.

Thanks for getting back with me...she said SIADH last night..but they didn't bring it up again. I guess my input/output is okay. I hardly want anything to eat and I'm a PIG! I love to eat and they have good food here. Now my jaw is starting to get sore on top of not wanting to eat. I had to put a patch on my right eye today because it's so blurry it was getting on my nerves. It's off now though. Had another CT too...waiting for the results. I hate hospitals on the weekends! I was hitting almost tears in the pain scale last night and this morning so they wanted to get a scan. I'm kind of glad I wasn't home because I might have thought I was dying.
Once again not sure if I mentioned I'm going to need homehealthcare..probably a walker for a bit..anyways...talk to you soon!

My pain wasn't managed until right before I was released. In fact, my NS offered to release me on Sunday evening after a Friday surgery, but i refused stating that I wasn't going anywhere until my pain was being managed properly on oral meds. I ended up needing to take oxycontin, motrin, and percocet to manage it enough to go home.

Be honest about your pain levels. I have read from many posters that some surgeons give minimal meds, and only switch to stronger ones if the patient complains of excessive pain. Pain management is important, as it is crucial for both getting enough rest and for having the desire and energy to get up and try to move. I found the nurses to be much more helpful in helping me gauge and describe my pain. They are the ones that convinced me that I should not be near the point of tears, and that with proper meds it should be no more than a 3 or 4 at most.

All of my nurses rocked! That makes everything so much easier..except for the nurse who removed the last 2 of the 5 lines from the surgery and put in a new painful one.

I feel like I'm complaining so much...but shouldn't be. I really know what you mean about the pure exhaustion now..I said I feel like I should be winning a gold medal just for standing up. They still won't let me walk, so I'm losing strength..hoping to go home tomorrow though. I'm confused as to knowing when is the right time to go home. I don't want to screw up and go too early but I also don't want to be here forever

Ouch! yeah, I got one that hit a nerve and lost the use of my hand once for a day or two... that really upset me. I forgot about that.

You had a major surgery - what are you complaining about? Between a long surgery, the anesthesia which knocks you to the floor (it makes me stupid for months) and the pain, please, be nice to yourself. You will recover but in the beginning it just seems like forever! Once you get up to walk, the gains will come a bit faster and then you will start to see more progress but in the mean time, don't beat your self up AT ALL!

Thanks Horsey for the signing...that was very sweet :D

Now I have a kidney infection..so they're starting me on antibiotics again. Waiting for the NS is the pits..I've lost all of my appetite again too??

I'd imagine you wouldn't be going home until they let you wander the halls a bit.
Kidney infection? Guess brain tumor wasn't enough, that one had to be thrown in too, huh? I wonder if that is also suppressing your appetite, because I swear I was eating all day long while on steroids. Hope you feel better soon.
They say (not sure who "they" is but "they" sure do have a lot to say...) anyways... they say that you can expect a month of fatigue for every hour you were under? Not sure if it's true or not, but it does sound right. Once you start moving, you'll slowly gain back some of your strength.

Yeah, I agree, when you get up and walk around, you will feel so much better. Sorry about the infection - that really is not fun.
