"Atopia" is not in the medical dictionaries I checked, so I'm not sure whether it means the same as "atypia" and "atypical."  I guess you'll have to check this out with whoever prepared the report.

IF it does refer to atypical hyperplasia (of any sort--epithelial, lobal, or ductal), atypical indicates that that there are cells that have developed changes inconsistent with normal growth, and hyperplasia means there are more cells than normal. This is not considered to be cancer or a precancerous lesion, but it does mean the individual is predisposed to increased risk of cancer.

I hope when you get the pathology report, it too shows no cancer!  If so, your doctor should make recommendations for you based on your hx of atypical cells

Best wishes!

I have not seen that term before, and haven't been able to locate it through searches of some breast cancer sites

I have found atypical ductal epithelial hyperplasia and epithelial hyperplasia without atypia. (There are several posts about these conditions in the archives of this site.)

Could you please check your report again and let us know the exact term (and spelling) that it contained?

Sorry not to be of more help...

It's difficult to answer with such a small amount of information. Are you sure you don't mean ADH or perhaps the E was a typo ? Please post again with more information.   Thank you .....
