Dillan has problems

I took him in today to be checked up by a vet. I got him from the shelter 4 days ago so knowing this....I was aware of the risks. Well...here are the results. Dillan has an upper respiratory infection. Dillan also has ear infection and is being treated right now with Tresaderm. Lastly, they found an area under the chin with no hair and all scratched up and itchy. They collected samples and the results will be in sometime.....in like 20 days. They suspect 2 things: Ringworm or my cat, Abby, scratching him  when playing with him. If Dillan has ringworm they might report that and take him away from me. Ringworm is extremely contagious.

His UTI symptoms are only sneezing. The vet said she would not give me any meds to give Dillan because the cold is very mild. I am terrified my older cat will get infested. Keeping Dillan isolated is no use as Abby has already been exposed to it although he isn't showing signs of UTI (perhaps his immune system is strong enough?)

Is it really fair that they may take away my cat if he has ringworms? I can treat it with the help of a vet! I know it is highly contagious but is it really necessary to take away my cat just like that? I don't want to seem ridiculous, but I want my cat with me. Are they being fair here?

I don't see how they will be taking Dillian away from you. I really hope not.

I've never heard of taking a cat away from someone because of ringworm.  It is contagious but it's easily treatable and hardly fatal.  In fact, with the cats we see, it's rare for one not to have it!  And some cats are prone to it - if we withheld those adoptions, well, we'd have our hands totally tied!

Whether or not it's ringworm, a lot of cats are very prone to skins conditions.  If need be you can keep him isolated in a separate room until he's no longer contagious - if the diagnosis warrants that.  Or you can, if need be, treat abby for ringworm or whatever it is.  It happens.  A lot.

URIs are easily knocked out, too.  And almost as common as ringworm.

I agree, fight it if they try to take him away.  You obviously have a history of responsible cat ownership that is easily proved.  Including your work on this board.

Did they actually tell you that if it's ringworm you can't keep him?

PM me if I can help in any way, ok?

Yes. They will not take him away if the case is mild. But if it is severe then they will report it. The vet knows that if he indeed has ring worms, he got it at the shelter. My cat, Abby has a county tag and a vet history which gets sent to Animal Control every othe month. They know Abby is indoors and has been the only pet in my household. They know Abby is clear of all kinds of infectious agents such as the flu virus or any fungal infection. So, if Dillan has ring worms he got it at the shelter. What they do is they replace my cat with a healthier one, as if cats were objects. NO. Dillan  has made himself at home and he is more than comfortable living with my other cat, my husband and me. He is a part of my family, the baby of the house. I don't want another cat and I told the vet. I told her I wanted my cat with me and they had no right to take him away. She just said it was not fair that I paid adoption fees for an animal that is supposed to be healthy. He is healthy!! I am praying he tests negative for Aids when he gets tested for it, but Aids would not be a reason to put him to sleep either. I can treat my cats. I would never refuse to take them to the vet and get them treated no matter what it takes. They know I am responsible. They’re always sending me little things like pet videos and gifts because I donate and because I support the cause. I have always complied with everything, including rabies vaccination before the due date and other shots. If my animals get sick I immediately take action, and they know it. How can they do this to people?

I will fight this. They can't just take away my cat and give me another one!! It's crazy!

That shelter is not right....  I don't get the mentality people have... Reminds me of something I read about a petstore somewhere...have some kind of replacement guarentee if the animal turns out sick...  Pet stores are a whole 'nother topic of their own... Knowing what I know now about pet stores I will not get animals there if I can avoid it...

Put up a strong fight. I still don't see how they can force you to give up Dillan, no matter what...

MJ, I don't see how they could force me, either. He is mine. Most importantly he is legally mine. Why they would think that I want another cat as replacement is their business. I won't leave my cat to them. My cat stays with me. It is not their choice but mine to treat the kitten no matter how much money I spend on him. It's my own darn business if I want to take him to the vet and spend whatever amount of money I need to spend to cure him. I don't need anyone to give me a better option such as "getting another cat instead". No. It doesn't work that way. I would like to see who would dare take him away from me. I signed papers but none of them said anything about this. I am relatively new to this area although I have always donated to this shelter, especially because I had one cat euthanized there. I guess they just assume people know this. Perhaps people have complaint too much about sick pets leaving the shelter, so their solution is to take those back in and give out the healthier ones so you don't lose your money. Hopefully, it is all but scratches from Abby, from playing rough, and not ring worms. I am hopeful that everything is going to be ok.

If Dillan has ringworm i am sure the shelter will need to know about it so they can treat the other animals at the shelter but i wouldnt think they would take him away from you since that is not what you want.  Maybe they just have to give you that option.  Ringworm is easily treated.  I used to get that all the time when we would get cattle in from out west.  We just kept a trusty tube of medicated salve on hand!!!!   It will all be okay PK..........sara
