Recovery.

Hello, I am Recently diagnosed and scheduled for surgery on tuesday 6/25/13. I am scared but found comfort in this community, it has answered ALOT of questions. I have had different surgeries everyyear since 2007.I know this is MAJOR. I am concerned about the intubation. I have had a bad experience and I would like to know if anyone was still intubated in icu after surgery? thank you in advance for any responses.

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

It is normal to be scared I think we all were to some degree....so u r ok : )

May I ask what happened when u were intubated b4? I had an issue with a surgery prior to my surgery and was concerned as well...so, in the OR I had a convo with the anesthesiologist and told him and he promised me to use a smaller tube...and I was fine...not knowing what ur issue was ...not sure what else to suggest but do talk with that Dr so he can be aware and do something to prevent it for u.

I was not intubated in ICU...oxygen yes, and many other things....but it is all  typical for a major surgery.

If u have more questions, let me know, and please add ur name to the surgery date thread so we can post a prayer thread for u, if it is ok....and ask someone to post updates on ur progress : )

Yes I was intubated during surgery.  I also had to have a trach tube after surgery.  This was all do to me doing something wrong.  Instead of letting them pull the tube out I awoke and had a panic attack and pulled it out myself not once bu three times.

Thank you so much. I guess i will. when I had my youngest son,2002 iit was cesarean.  so the dr cut without the Anesthesiologist  ok. the epidoral didnt work and i felt it. it was emergency knock out. when i woke in recovery i was choking and gasping for my breath. since then I always have had an issue with intubation.

I've had four surgeries and the tube is ALWAYS out when I wake up. I agree with Selma -- let them know you're concerned about this so you can get the reassurance you need.

I hope your surgery goes well!

I agree with czpdx, I have had 3 surgeries and I have never been awake when the tube was in place, being put in, or being taken out. My throat just feels a little sore and scratchy after I wake up, but that is all. Like the others said, talk to the doctor about any concerns you may have.

Good luck!
