Thnxs for all the great information you guys! My NS said he feels I'm not a surgical candidate yet.
My nystagmus is improved after surgery, but I'm definitely not the keen reader I was for most of my life. I become very weary of reading (not sleepy though), & my eyes feel like they continue to move.
Good description, czpdx.
I also had nystagmus prior to my last decompression. It was particularly frustrating when I was trying to read. I'd describe it like reading with the book on top of a washer during the spin cycle. My understanding is that it's related to pressure on the trigeminal nerve. My nystagmus resolved after my surgery.
Nystagmus is a term to describe fast, uncontrollable movements of the eyes (horizontal, vertical, rotatory, or mixed). The resulting nystagmus is often named as a description of the movement, eg: downbeat nystagmus, upbeat nystagmus, seesaw nystagmus, periodic alternating nystagmus.
These movements may be in one or both eyes. People with this condition are usually not aware of the eye movements. Nystagamus is a listed possible symptom of Chiari Malformation. Downbeat nystagmus (slow upward drift in the position of both eyes followed by a rapid jerk downward) is particularly mentioned with Chiari Malformation.
My eyes feel like they are twitching when I close them and try to sleep it is very annoying. I never had anyone notice when I look at them. I was also wondering what could cause this.
