We're worried

My wife and I are very worried about the development of our little boy.

He is a happy, healthy 21 months old.

My wife is a children’s Occupational Therapist and at around 17 months she had started to notice that his speech etc was not advancing the way it should.

At around 19 moths she took him to see a Paediatrician who said that he had something called 'glue ear' - meaning that there was a build-up of fluid which subsequently meant that he could not hear and we were told that over the last 6 months or so he was profoundly deaf.

My little boy does not have any language at all, but this could be attributed to the fact that he could not hear for a long while.

However, in terms of development he is still way behind his peers in terms of his play (he tends to chew a toy and throw it down, does not do any role play, has limited ways of saying when he wants something etc). His lack of development is most apparent when he is with his peers.

We are due to take him back to the Paediatrician in 12 weeks and she has advised that he may need to see a Speech and Language Therapist.

Are we right to be so worried, or is this normal when factors such as 'glue-ear' are evident?
