Black gums after tooth loss, what is the cause and solution?

Grandma couldn't swallow food by herself, so she had a hose in her mouth during treatment. However, after the treatment, when I looked inside the mouth, one tooth was missing and the gums around it were black. Should I take her to the dentist? I am curious about the causes of darkening gums.
