Feeling very down

Dear All,

I am feeling very down and constantly contemplating suicide. I'm very distressed about university. The people around me won't let me quit school. I just failed my mid-terms. I study hard but some questions seemed so alien to me...i just don't know anymore. I feel like a total failure. I don't have anyone to talk to. I come from an Asian background where studies are everything. I feel so so sad. I just lock myself in my room going through my lecture notes but some of it don't make sense at all. I've lost my aptitude for my studies and life. I haven't eaten well because I just don't feel like eating. I just want everything to end. I feel like going for a run, just keep running till my heart stops. Help me get over this please.

Is there a course that you would prefer to do instead of this one? Many times when our hearts are not into what we are doing, the task seems much more difficult and causes a tremendous amount of stress. I know it is not easy but if this is the case, you need to discontinue what you are doing and enroll into something you love. This is your future. Do not stay in a field that will make you miserable. Its not worth it.

Also, I feel like you have so much work to do, you need to put the lecture notes away sometimes and just CHILL. People do not understand that school and work can make one seriously SICK. Talk to your parents, they may not agree with your decision but you need to express yourself and stand strong. They are not the ones going through the agony, remember that. So they are not in a position to sway you.

If you are trying to get honors or a "perfect" GPA, do not put so much pressure on yourself. Just try your hardest. Thats it.

Suicide is never the answer. Death solves nothing. In life we have an opportunity to change things, to make a difference within us. Death just leaves a trail of pain and hurt. If the feeling persists, please speak to a professional.

Take good care.

Anna

I'm taking each day by itself. I have decided to stop trying to get my elusive 4.0GPA. I will just study hard and try to pull my grades up but that's about it. I want to enjoy my varsity life too, I'm no longer concern about competition. ;)

I tried so many ways to have more friends but guess my university culture is where one keeps to themselves. I'm feeling much better today. I decided to seek comfort in animals and went to befriend a few stray cats in my area. I'm a happy cat lady and happy human being for atleast an hour a day. I just look forward to seeing the cats everyday. They keep me going. :) I just have to be strong. :) Thank You again. :)

Well if you are in college I am guessing that you are over 18 and if that is so then I would certainly confront your parents or whoever is forcing you to go to the university. Personally I took a year off after I graduated from high school with much resistance from my father who pushed academics since I was a child, but I firmly believed that I wanted to be in the work force first and figure out what I really wanted to do. After a year or so I enrolled in my college and figured it out slowly because I wanted to be there and finally graduated and was employed almost immediately.
You need to decide if you really want to go to college and if you don't then tell those people around you of your decision and find a job and just work without any homework for now.
I also would recommend if you are truly stressed out that you talk to a counselor, no biggie, just someone to vent to and they can give you ideas about things in your life. This might help you to organize your thoughts about your life and what you really want for your future.
Hope this helps,
Angela

First, if you sincerely are contemplating suicide, you need to seek help immediately.  Sucicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

You are putting a lot of pressure on yourself with your studies.  That is not a BAD thing, however you are taking it to the extreme.  Your grades may be suffering because of your depression.

My advice to you is to seek professional help by going to a psychiatrist.  He/she can discuss medication and therapy options with you...both which I feel would be helpful to you.

As for school, how about seeking out some study groups?  There are plenty out there, and not only will it help you with academics, but it will help your feeling of being alone...you may even develop some new friendships!

Take it one day at a time...a few bad grades does not warrant throwing in the towel!  College is hard, as it should be...I had to work extremely hard in Nursing school, when I thought I would just breeze right through it.  All of those sleepless nights and stress were defnitely worth it...I have a great career that I love, that pays the bills too!  Plus, the feeling of accomplishment was worth a million bucks!

Hang in there!

it seems to me that the real pressure your feeling is coming from those around you because you want to quit school and they won't let you...im assuming that must be your family.  the best advice i can give you is when your studying, learn to take a break and try not to take in too much information at once. there is only 24 hours in a day and tou can not spend all that time focused on your school. you need time for yourself too. catch a movie with a friend, go for a walk in the park, go for a drive in the country, maybe do a little bit of site-seeing to take your mind off of the pressures of school and the stresses that people can put on you.
slow down and stop trying to live YOUR life for others around you. take your time, slow down and catch a breath. when the pressure gets to be too much for you, take a break and go back to your studies when your relaxed and able to concentrate. i think once you gain control of your own self and your own life, you will be able to concentrate much better on your school. and when it comes to you not eating well, my advice to you on that is simple, eat in moderation. just eat small meals throughout the day. maybe an apple and a banana with a hard boiled egg for breakfast, a turkey sandwich with carrots for lunch or a bowl of vegetable soup for dinner with a piece of wheat bread. just eat throughout the day in moderation. pace yourself when eating and pace yourself when doing your school work. no need to be in a hurry, life will still be here tomorrow.  good luck and let me know how things are going. suicide is never the answer. once you do that, you cant take it back. i think i would rather be able to have that second chance and keep trying to live my life. one day at a time.
