I too have this problem, also I have read many articles relating to it, before consulting the psychiatrist ,I suggest some of the steps I have followed and worked for me
do the little exercise in morning atleast 20-30min,
hang out with friends, keep your self busy try listening to friends,
listen for music,
try to focus on things you are doing,
and keep on alerting your self on regular interval to not get lost again into thoughts,

I don't know what to do anymore.... I am a 32 yr old male and I cannot control my thoughts...  For about the last 17 years I have had issues with controlling my thoughts as well... Over the years I they have tried me on every anti-depressant under the sun, and none of them worked, if anything they made me more depressed.

Recently I have been diagnosed ADHD, and been put on Dex amphetamin, this seemed to help, but I'm not sure after 3 months whether this is the solution and I'm sorta scared that no one is able to actually identify why.  The thing is that I had a car accident on 31/12/1997, and sustained an ABI (aquired brain injury - meaning my brain was shaken around quite violently).  Now in regards to the Dex, what it does for me is it allows me to concentrate on one thing at a time, and thats great.

But I've found now that this still isn't helping the fact that my brain won't shut down, I currently see a phyc. and a really great councillor, but nothing seems to work, I suspect that it could be an acute anxiety, because the only thing that has ever let me get any rest and reduce the amount I'm thinking was when I was given Valium.

I don't know what to do anymore, because I only sleep about 4-5 hours a day because as soon as my current meds, the Dex, wears off, my brain clicks in and I'm up most of the night, sometimes all night.  I'm looking for anyone's thoughts as to whats going on so I can discuss it with my physc and councillor.

I also have issues controlling my emotions, I can go from wo... to go.... in a matter of a heart beat, and its killing me, cause I can't eat, I can't sleep, I can't concentrate, I can't function correctly.  It's never bloody ending, and I don't know how to handle it anymore.

Just to prove a point - my eyes are currently filling up with tears, cause I fear it will never change.  I've lost most of my friends because of it, I cannot even get in a relationship, or make friends, I feel like I can help everyone with their problems (which I can), but cannot help myself.

PLEEEEEEEEEASE HELP ME, SOMEONE!!!!!!!!! ANYONE!!!!!!!!! EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have had trouble with a racing mind for many years and I have tryed differant things . I really don't think you can or should try to stop it but rather focus it on something positive. If you need to solve a problem , fix something, or just figure something out a racing mind can be turned into a very good thing instead of just driving you crazy. Always focus on something positive when your mind starts to race. Meds are not any help all they can do is screw you up.

I was looking for information to help my sister who is bi-polar and having horrible racing thoughts when I came across your comments about hearing music.  I am bi-polar and on Lithium and Lexapro.  I have never had a problem with hearing music that is not playing until now.  I thought I was losing my mind!  I go to the living room to turn off the television, and it is not on.  I go to turn off the radio in the car, and it is not on.  I can't go to sleep because I hear music, or I wake up because I hear it.  It leaves me feeling like I must be going crazy.  I was so glad to read what you wrote.  I know now that there are other people who are experiencing this.  Thank you.  If anyone else is dealing with this, I would like to know.

Are you seeing a psychiatrist now? That would be the first step and of course talk therapy goes along with that. "Anxiety attacks" do have a speeded up quality but they occur in reaction to events generally. "Racing thoughts" on an ongoing basis is a standard sign of mania so I would strongly believe that what's going on is bipolar disorder. However, only a psychiatrist can diagnose so why don't you seek a consultation with a psychiatrist who can then make a better determination.

I get that racing in my head from time to time.  For me its part of an anxiety attack.  I need to stop whatever I am doing.  Focus on breathing and bringing my heart rate back down.  The trick is to notice the signs before they get to bad to handle.  Once you know the signs that you're having these thought they become easier to control.  Just takes time and patients, just like everything on here....Slow and steady

A combination of medication and psychotherapy is the best way to control racing thoughts.  Making an appointment with a doctor to discuss your concerns is the first step.  Effective treatments are available.
