westie behaviour

My westie has always suffered bouts of vomiting since he was a pup( mostly bile) and occasional diarrhoea with upset tummy. On these days he becomes very lethargic and off his food then when on the mend becimes active again. His problem at the moment is a couple of times recently he has sat down on ground every 2mins when out his walk and his penis has been erect. He is also very tired this can last for about 1/2hour to an hour then all of a sudden his energy returns and he is back to normal. He was "snipped"at a year old. Do you think he hasa hormone inbalance?

I think it good to have the vet take a look, plan on taking a poop sample along in a plastic bag so they can check for worms, etc.  I assume the vet will want to do that, if not you can throw it away..just like after a poop on the side walk in town, my Westie seems to like to do that.

I recall seeing neutered male doges with an extended penis (erections), but I think it was never often.  I have also seen neutered dogs humping other dogs, and even a person's leg, and sometimes it is a female, go figure. Seem sex drive is a hard thing to stop : )

Many thanks for your reply. I do believe the vomiting is due to having a sensitive tummy. But the other issue is of concern especially since he was neutered when he was just over 1 year old. He is now 4 years old. I am going to have to take him to the vets.

I have a 9 year (est) old Westie.  He was rescued just over a year ago and had not been neutered.  I assume that is what you mean by "snipped".  The rescue person had our dog neutered, and I believe it was a castration, not a snipping.  I have never seen him exhibit any sexual interest/reaction/erection and while he has vomited a few times (I'll estimate 5 times) over the past 12 months, there were no other abnormal behavior.

My one experience with the Westie breed is they are very sensitive and subject to many allergies which may include quality dog food and quality table-type foods.  He is also very selective and will not eat some foods that all other dogs I have know would love to have, e.g., albacore tuna in water.  He eats a no grain fish and sweet potato kibble and generally eats more than enough.  He never gobbles food.

You didn't tell us the age of your Westie thus when he was "snipped".

That is a tough one, so all I can suggest is to see your vet as soon as you can.  Blessings - Blu
