My Boston Terrier is doing the same thing.   Out of nowhere, she started having these symptoms.  The vet was treating her for an infection but now her head is swollen twice the size of her body and her cheeks look like she has walnuts in them.   I'm making myself sick here.

Routine (Yearly) Vaccines should be a thing of the past......All 27 Veterinary Teaching Schools across the U.S. recommend every 3 years, now......

Most Vet practices continue with yearly vaccines because this is the largest percent of their income......However, this would be at the expense of their clients animals.....Do you realize that your tiny Chi is receiving the same dose as the German Shepherd that lives next door? Know why? Because it's cheaper to buy a whole same dose set of vaccines as opposed to singles.....

Exemptions are available in every state, but the Vet MUST recognize the symptoms as being a vaccine reaction.....In most cases, they do not agree....Then you have a problem.....

As with Ginger, my dogs all have "Titers" run.....All three dogs still have high immunities even after 5 years.....Needless to say, I therefore do not allow any more.....My oldest (10 years) was just vaccinated only for rabies because it had been 5 years....He (Her Vet) chose to only give her 1/2 the dose because of her size (Poodle Mix).....This is the kind of doctor you want to have treating your pets!

Understand, you DO need those YEARLY exams.....Just NOT the vaccines that go with them!

A Holistic Vet will have an antidote for vaccine reactions......A regular Vet WILL NOT!    Take care, Karla

It's always wise to ask the vet to run "Titer Testing" for a dog, rather than vaccinating routinely.
I had titer tests done for my dog, as a multi-booster was due (after 3 years) She had immunity present to everything except Canine infectious Hepatitis, and Leptospirosis. She still had Distemper and Parvo immunity!
Although we do not have rabies vaccinations here (UK) It is still worth having Titer tests run, as it is VERY possible rabies immunity would last a while too.

And Titer tests are best definitely if a dog has other health issues like weak kidneys etc, or is aging.
And remember.....NO DOG WHO SHOWS ANY SIGNS OF ILLNESS WHEN VACCINATION IS DUE SHOULD BE VACCINATED UNTIL FULLY RECOVERED!

My daughter just called in tears, her dog's head was shaking and he had just had his vaccinations today.  I have been doing research on the internet and apparently there are some states that allow you to get a letter stating that you do not need to have the vaccinations if they jeopardize your dog's or cat's health.  I would check to see if you can forget about getting the shots if it does cause complications.  I have a dog that a few years ago started having seizures.  I'm now wondering if they were brought on my his shots.  I'm going to rethink having him vaccinated and check into getting the letter stating that he does not have to have the shots.  I check for both VA and NY and they have the exemptions.  My dogs are in the house most of the time so I'm really not that concerned with him getting rabies.

I am so sorry you had to go through this with your dog! Thank goodness all is ok with him now.
It seems to me that vets are still in denial about the common and serious side effects caused by vaccination. It is wise to be educated about all you can do to protect your pet, such as using Benadryl, titer testing, and being aware reactons can and do occur...like you said, staying with your pet and keeping an eye on any sudden changes or unusual symptoms within that 24 hours.
My dog developed diarrhea once about 36-48 hours after vaccination. She really wasn't very well for about 24 hours. I KNEW it was a reaction to the vaccine (she was always totally fit and well at that time) but the vet's office didn't think so! She was fine after that bad day, but still, I ALWAYS ask questions now. And since her kidneys are now weak, I doubt very much if I will allow her to be vaccinated at all in January, when she is due.

Thank you for a very helpful post. But sorry you and your dog suffered so much.

I live in Oahu, Hawai'i; have a Chihuahua who is an applehead & about 5.5lbs. He had all his puppy shots as soon as he reached 1.5lbs (at about 2.5 months old)- I had never noticed any allergic reactions early-on.  At about a year old he went to get his 1of2 Rabies-shots (not required in Hawaii the rabies vaccine, however he was flying & needed to to return back home after traveling.  Within 3 days the bridge of his nose swelled up (he looked like an ant-eater) & he had EXCESSIVE diarrhea & then broke out in hives all over his face. I called the vet for a follow-up; they said the DR was booked all week, and if my Chi seemed alright their other Dr had an opening 4 days later. I brought him in after almost a week of non-stop diarrhea (he lost approximately 1lb which roughly equals a human losing 26lbs). The DR said he thought it was a "bug bite". I however, did not believe that. They advised me to give him liquid-childrens-benadryl for the "allergic reaction" and said he would be fine,  For the 2nd shot I convinced the vet to to the FAVN/Titer testing. On a 2.5 scale he was at a whopping 5.5 so we avoided the 2nd shot.

Most recently at 1 year, he is due for his routine vaccines: Parvo/Distemper/Bordatella. Initially, I thought it was just (1) shot, then at the appt. I found it is was 3. They combines the Parvo/Distemper into 1-syringe (is that Normal??) and the Boardatella was Intra-Nasal (drops into the nose).  When I saw this I'd asked the Vet if maybe we should give my Chi benadryl first or hold off on half; he insisted my dog would be fine. I should have listened to my intuition. It was a Sunday, I had already waited almost an hour to be seen by the vet, after his shot, I even waited in the parking lot for 15minutes watching my dog closely. He layed down to sleep which is unusual for him in the car, but the paper said the shots could make him tired, so I drove home.  By the time we got home (30mins) he began rubbing his nose and sure enough, the bridge of his nose began to swell.  I gave him liquid Benadryl & began calling the Vet. Of course, they were close & did not pick up the phone. I was SO pissed- I'd told the Vet. Within 15 more minutes my dog got hives from head to to & started to swell so bad he began to inflate & look more like a pug, than chihuahua. I couldn't breathe through his nose, and began wheezing.  I raced to an emergency vet who gave him an IV/intravenous of Dymethanzone? to counteract the allergic reaction/Anapilactic-shock. My dog's swelling went down, but was replaced my shaking, twitching, and what appeared hallucinations (he seemed to be looking at stuff that was there), gerking. The Emergency vet explained it was a side-affect of the drug (Dymethazone) he treated the allergic reaction. This Vet #2 said if I'd waited any longer my dog could have easily died since he had such a sever allergic reaction.  It all happened so fast I was relieved to have my furry-angel.
However, by the next day he began to have SEVERE diarrhea, and then all the pools of blood & blood clots began...(he is only 5.5lbs.) Withing 12 hours he went from 5.5.lbs to 5lbs (equivalent to us at 13lbs). I cried severely that I'd let this happen to him; the Emergency vet said if this blood/diarrhea continued until the next morning to bring my chi back to his Vet in the AM. As I cried for my poor dog literally have pools of blood come out of him when going #2, miraculously, he was in good spirits: drinking water, eating, licking my face, even trying to play. I noticed though, he was incessantly licking each and every tear & I realized he needed electrolytes. I raced out the door (my other half did, actually) and gave him Pedialyte (unflavored) throughout the night.  Give Electrolytes (i.e.Pedialyte is IDEAL, Gatoraide has a lot of sugar, I think) is EXTREMELY important when your dog is losing diarrhea. (Dog should go to vet for I.V. if unable to drink fluids in combination with diarrhea because fluids going out, with no fluids going in can mess up the blood-chemistry. I won't even begin to to get started on the what the blood indicates.  The morning, ASAP, I took him back to the vet. He called it Hemmoratic-Rhinnitis? which basically means by dog hemmoraged (intestinal/stomach) bleeding from and Allergen. Long story short, my dog was given 1.) Antidiarretic, as needed (anti-diarrhea) 2.) Amoxicyn (pink liquid anti-biotic to insure the stomach-bleeding doesn't infect & reach bloodstream 3.) Sucralfate (ulcer med that coats the stomach to try to repair tears in intestines).  So far my dog is doing OK, he is in good spirits. He did throw-up this morning, and I am religiously offering him Pedialyte periodically. When he went #2 is was wholesome & black tarry (old blood) but no fresh-blood-stool! Which means hopefully, no more bleeding.  I will keep you posted, as well as post some important comments from the Vets (not sure how trustworthy) & some observations I've found on my own. * I don't want this posting to discourage people from NOT getting vaccines; but I do want to STRESS how important it is to watch your pet closely, ask MANY questions, specifically the a.) vaccine-brand b.) dosage given c.) Warning-sighns/Watching Pet CLOSELY after injection & staying with your Pate as much as possible the first 24hours after shots, and watching your pet INTENTLY the 3days after, too. IF YOUR PET HAS AN ALLERGIC REACTION TAKE BACK TO VET IMMEDIATELY AFTER, TAKE LOTS OF NOTES, SPLIT THE DOSE, USE YOUR OWN JUDGEMENT *YOUR KNOW YOUR PET, BEST*....I'll keep you posted...
