Black Lab

I have a 12 year old black lab and she has recently had a hard time moving around, her hips and back legs.  Now all she can do to move is move her front legs, dragging the back legs.  Is the something that can be treated or do I need to have her put to sleep.

i am really sorry to hear of your Lady
i lost my Shadow also a black lab on june 30 to a sudden seizure that there was no way she could come out of and now i am being told that the black mold in the back of my apt could be the cause of the sudden seizure
she was perfectly healthy all test results came back good there was no reason for her seizure
if anybody knows anything about this please leave me an email at ***@**** i would really appreciate the input
i am still crying over shadow she was my life and would have been 9 on july 21

I had to put Lady down last Thursday, August 11, 2011.  She was not getting any better after the shot and pills.  It was one of the hardest things i had to do.  I miss her terribly. I appreciate all of the information and kindness.

She almost made it to 13.  Her birthday was September 14, 1998.  I had her since November 4, 1998.

SHE WAS THE BEST BLACK DOG IN THE WORLD, SHE KNEW, I ALWAYS TOLD HER SHE WAS !!!

I too thank you for the update.......If your interested, Acupuncture or Laser Therapy would help her condition immensely.....Both can be found in Tulsa, OK, not too far from you.....If your closer to Stillwater, there's a Holistic Vet there, also.....

Good luck and I'll be thinking about you both...Karla

Thanks for the update. Sorry to hear this news and will keep fingers crossed this will help her.
This is easier to do with a small dog but I see you have a Lab. Do you happen to have a pool or access to one?  I only mention this because sometimes aquatic therapy can do wonders.  You wouldn't want to overdo that and would have to support her in the water but the water therapy may help but not sure due to her age now.  Hope you don't have to make that decision.

I took Lady to the vet, he gave her a steroid shot and advised that I continue the arthritis pills that I have been giving her.  He said that the shot should be fully kicked in by Wednesday.  If she does not get any better by the end of the week I wll have to make that dreaded decision.  At this time, as any and all time, it is in God's hands.  She is eating and drinking and I have her inside, under the a/c.  I truly appreciate all the feedback from everyone.   Thank you all.

Please do come back and update us on this. The reason I ask that is because, apart from surgery (if recommended -and if so, which I hope would be successful) -then depending on the diagnosis, and also depending on your dog's general fitness, temperament and condition, there are even options sometimes for a paraplegic dog, which do not necessarily have to include euthanasia!

Oh My......What has your Vet suggested?  This sounds like a Ruptured Disc of the spine....Yes, there are treatment options...... She needs to see her Vet ASAP if you have not already......He/she will help you with your decisions for your girl.....Let us know what you find out......Good luck, Karla

P.S. I've lived through this & can help you further when you find out what your dealing with......My dog had the surgery to correct it, but you only have 36 hrs. after the rupture for the best outcome. (That is IF it's a Ruptured Disk)........Please, come back when you have her evaluated.......Karla

Sorry to hear about you dog.  That may definitely be a spinal problem or hip problem. Does she have any history of dysplasia or arthritis?
I would never even to venture a guess if it was time to put her to sleep.  I think you need to take her to your Vet for an evaluation.
Good luck.
