Looking for an appropriate diet?

Dear madam,
I have spoken to you before about my 8 year old-male dalmation. He has been diagnosed with CRF of the kidneys and the doctor has advised me to put on a Royal Canine renal 16 diet. He has been on this diet for the last 3 months and eats the food only because he is not given any other. Is this ok? But i really feel that a healthy natural diet with enough natural nutrition for his kidney and foods that wont hurt his CRF. Today he hasnt eaten at all and was shiverring for a bit.. The weather in new delhi is not cold today but he was sitting in an air conditioned room which has just pleasantly cool.   Could you help me in Figuring out an appropriate natural diet for him?  Thank you.

Thank you so much for posting your dogaware information. My little minpin Brewster is 14 years old and has CRF. This is his first illness ever. Test results showed that he was in the initial stage of CRF about 7 months ago but he was running around like a pup until last week when he got dehydrated from diahrrea.  He had to spend a night at the vet's getting IV fluids and I was sent home with a bag of fluids to continue giving him sub-q.
I asked them for diet information 3 times before they gave me any info at all other than the Hills KD which he doesn't like. He just seemed miserable. For a while I wished I'd let him die instead of reviving him with the fluids. Then I found your site. Thank God! He spit up a little this morning and I remembered that I read about giving the TUMS for the phosphorus build up in the stomach. The effect was nothing short of a miracle. About 2 minutes later he ran into the room and stared at me to thank me. He felt so good for the rest of the day. Now, why wouldn't my vet tell me that simple bit of information? THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

Hello and welcome.  I'm so sorry to hear about your Dal.  I lost one of my dogs to renal failure in January and understand it's not an easy thing to endure for either one of you.  During the last three months of my dog's life, the website I've posted below helped a great deal regarding diet and supplements in dogs with kidney disease.  If you print out the whole thing, it's about 40 pages long but worth reading every word.  I referred back to it many times and hope you will find it as helpful as I did.  Best to you and your lovely Dal.  :-)
