Visual Vertigo

I recently went to my ENT regarding some symptoms I have been experiencing that I thought might be vertigo.  I was diagnosed with visual vertigo based on my list of symptoms only, no tests were performed.  Well, I was given a hearing test that was normal.  He did mention it could be an early symptom of MS, but he would expect me to have other symptoms as well if that was the case.  I asked him what other symptoms I might have and he simply said I would have more going on than just the vertigo.

I referred myself to a local practice that specializes in neurotology and was given a battery of balances tests.  During one of the tests I heard one nurse point out to another that she saw a nystagmus.  At the conclusion of the tests, I was told I would hear from the dr about what other tests might be needed.

About 2 weeks later I received a call from a different nurse stating my tests were normal and there was no need for me to see the dr.  I don't understand how the tests can be normal if a nystagmus was seen.  I can't even get a copy of the test results, as the practice is saying they can't release them because I didn't actually see the dr.

I'm confused here and don't know where to go next. If in fact I do have a nystagmus then there's no way the test was normal, as a nystagmus is a symptom of other conditions.  Has anyone else had any similar experiences?

Basically I was able to call them and say that my ENT diagnosed me with the vertigo but I wanted the balance testing to determine the cause, and I was scheduled for the tests.  I don't know if they sent the results to my regular ENT or not, but I'm afraid to ask since he just dismissed me and said the vertigo was nothing to worry about.  I don't know how receptive he'll be to me now that I went to another practice for additional testing.

I think I'm going to send a formal request for my records to the practice first, and see if I can get the results that way.  Maybe they'll be more responsive to than that me just asking for them over the phone.  If not, then I'll definitely go to the office and do as you suggested.

I feel like I'm stuck here.  I know there is nothing "normal" about having a nystagmus, so how in the world can they say the tests were normal??

How could they have ordered tests without your having seen a doctor?  Did they send the results to your regular doctor so you can get them from him?  It is not ethical to allow you to pay for tests and then not give you the results, at the same time they tell you you don't need to see the doctor, but without seeing the doctor you can't get your results!

I would go and stand at the desk, saying you had tests there and you want a copy of your tests, being matter of fact, not upset.  If they say no, say you wish to see the office manager, because it makes no sense that you had tests and can't get the results.  I think if you stay calm and state you are happy to get the results or see a doctor to get the results, they will have to do one or the other.  You didn't pay for testing to only hear the words, "normal."
