Husband had cataract removed & that eye sparkles differently

I hope to get an answer in layman's terms. My husband had a higher cost lense put in his right eye upon cataract surgery recently. That eye is sparkling almost like a prism in the center. It looks bionic! Can someone explain why this is so?

I just went through my first cataract surgery and will be going in on the 18th for the second one.  I also noticed a "twinkle" in my repaired eye.  I actually love it.  It freaked my husband out a bit but I feel kind of special.  And for the first time in my life of being legally blind in both eyes- I can see- clearly, see vibrant colors that are amazing.  This is the first time in my life for me.  I didn't know what an impact this surgery would have on me.  Suddenly I am smiling!

Great news there @mitzpaws, I don’t have the twinkle and so far have only needed cataract surgery for my LE over two years ago, but the clarity difference is indeed amazing.

So happy to hear of your good results.  The twinkle is more common with Alcon Acrylic IOLs,  less common with silicone IOLs and Tecnis acrylic IOLs.  Some people like it, some don't. Often it goes away.

The way that most multifocal IOLs work is concentric rings of different powers.  Basically looks like small prisms.  That is what causes the reflex.  You can get this without multifocal IOLs and is more common with acrylic IOLs than silicone IOLs. More noticeable in people with big pupils. Many people like it and call it their 'twinkle"
