Goodguy, there's no way of knowing. For some, it can be brought under control fairly well with meds, diet change and lifestyle changes in probably a couple of months. For others, however it may continue for quite awhile.
The best I think anyone can say is try to bring things under control and keep the there. If in a number of weeks you're still having difficulty with the symptoms, ask your doc to either adjust the dosage of meds you're taking or try another brand of PPI. Not all meds work optimally for each individual. And they're not all alike. So if your doc tells you they are all alike, politely disagree and try a different brand. But give each brand at least a decent try - which can mean up to about 8-12 weeks.
And do make dietary changes. They can help a lot.
