Troy, to be perfectly frank, discussing the more rare and deleterious causes of bile duct dilation does no one any good until you have a lot more information. Your doc is probably starting to run you through a series of tests to try to get to the bottom of the problem. Stressing yourself out by thinking 'benign vs. malignant' is only going to raise your stress levels. Stress just isn't a thought process, it an actual physiological process of release of hormones/neurotransmitters that can do one heck of a lot of damage to your whole body. You have quite enough stress as it is just knowing 'something' isn't right in your body and feeling the discomfort that is causing.

It typically means that somewhere along the line you might have had a stone that caused backup of bile and pancreatic fluids in the duct that resulted in dilation. However, there are also other conditions that can result in dilation. It's something only your doc is going to really be able to discover based on your medical history and putting all the factors together.
