Hi dr I had befriended a girl from a restaurant and had sex with condom on after one and half minute, I pulled out and noticed that my condom was broken, I panicked and ran to the bathroom and washed it for 3 minutes with lots of soap and took a **** really hard, I immediately asked her, she said she tested a month ago and had no HIV, i am really in a mental breakdown and I went visited a local clinic here and the doctor said I need to take PEP pills for a month, which costed me 50 dollars, I cannot find the girl so I couldn’t check her, I am really paranoid and cannot stay calm, am I in a very big risk, pls help doctor.

Check this out: Insertive Penile-Vaginal Intercourse: Risk of infection 4 out of 10.000 exposures, according to CDC: https://www.cdc.gov/hiv/risk/estimates/riskbehaviors.html

Most clinics won't prescribe PEP unless you know the other person has HIV. PEP has serious risks for permanent side effects, and the other person was negative except for any risks she took during her testing window period - so I would not take the risk from PEP.

I'm no doctor, but in a similiar situation, I'm on my 14th day of PEP, after a condom rupture, and yes, every day has been hard. i guess we can only be strong and wait for the end of treatment, and take the test. I told my mother, who has very understanding, help me to see that the chances of a infection from a single exposure are minimal, and even so, God forbid, there's a chance for infection, the PEP should take care of it, like it does in most cases (80%+ effectiveness, according some studies), i won't tell you to relax.. because i can't either, and i understand, i just can tell you to be strong, and talk to somebody that can understand what are you going through
