congenital heart disease in newborn

Hi, my newborn is 1 month 24days old now. VSD was detected since she was born 4th days done by ECO. She also suffered Jaundice had 18 hours photo therapy treatments.heavy breathing constantly especially during feeding times. There is no sweating and the heart rythum is perfectly normal.her VSD size is 3mm and mild PDA . She was seen by doctor suggested to wait until she is 3 months and stay under supervision and there is 90% for the hole to close until then. prescribed Lasix(centoxin),Lanoxin (frusin) And KT for her to start immediately. I know that Lasix has some side efects as to pottasium loss and water loss, is it dangerous for a newborn to be taking these medications . I am really worried for my baby.Is it safe to use the medication? Is it recomended to go for surgery?? and when? I would appreciate if you could reply in details. Thank you.

Hi, 3mm VSD is really small. Small defects (less than 0.5 square cm) are quite common. With a small VSD, there is minimal shunting of blood and the pressure in the right ventricle remains normal.
Often, VSD's close spontaneously. This can happen within the first years of life of the newborn.
In small VSD, surgical repair is usually not recommended. However, long-term follow-up is required.

Also the PDA may close spontaneously. Your child's cardiologist will check periodically to see whether the PDA is closing on its own.

The medication is mainly needed for the PDA and its consequences, so yes she needs to take it (also the Lasix).
Surgery is probably not necessary now, and the future will show whether it is necessary then.
Discuss your safety concerns about the medication with the cardiologist. He/she will explain the benefit of it for your baby.
