Sudden stopping of atenalol

I was told that my grandfathers doctor had stopped his atenalol on Tuesday, he was feeling dizzy and they said his blood pressure was a bit low. He has been on 100mg atenalol for several years, I think for high blood pressure and chest pains, at the time he was under great stress as his wife was very I'll. I think it was stress mostly, he was not a young man then.

I was surprised the beta blocker was stopped suddenly like this and not at least replaced with something else. My grandad was 94 years old when he was found dead this morning. I can't help, but wonder about the atenalol stopping. There will probably have to be a post mortem, I don't know yet.

Does anyone know if stopping beta blockers like this is normal?

You should certainly NOT suddenly stop beta blockers such as Atenalol. It should be reduced over several weeks. There are many warnings about suddenly stopping beta blockers, because it can precipitate heart attack and worsen angina, or other serious heart conditions.
I've experienced coming off beta blockers and although only on 1.25mg of bisoprolol, I felt some strange twitching in my chest. I was restarted and cut down gradually over weeks.
Personally I think the Doctor should have reduced his medication, not stopped it. If the post mortem reveals a heart problem was the cause of death, I think the Doctor needs to answer some very serious questions.

I totally agree with you. Even if the Doctor is genuinely unaware of such dangers, it should be brought to his attention to protect others. However, Doctors do have all the required information regarding drugs at their fingertips and should check. A few weeks ago my Doctor tried to increase my blood pressure medication to 30mg a day. I knew this was higher than the maximum stated by the manufacturer and asked why she wanted such a high dosage. She checked her book and deeply apologised. I know it must be hard to manage so many drugs, but it took her 10 seconds to check what I had said.
I really am sorry to hear about your grandpa by the way :(  he was a nice age, wow 94.

Hi. I thought what you just said was the case. I even said so to my mother only last night. Will have to wait and see what happens now, i know very little at the moment. Nothing is going to bring him back but if the doctor made such a mistake it can't be left un questioned for the sake of other people.
