Chest pains due to heart disease are not stabbing and not really on the left side of the heart. People tend to think it is because they understand that the heart is on the left side, actually it tips to the left. The cause of true related heart chect pain is due to a lack of bloodflow to the heart walls. Usually, the middle aged person will have CAD (Coronary Artery Disease) and because of that, will have chest pain. They usually have to have closed heart surgery (a lot of people call that open heart surgery, there is a difference, in one the heart is actually opened up and the other it isn't) or have stents put into the blocked arteries. Sometimes, chest pain can be caused by having congenital heart disease or by having a form of cardiomyopathy where the muscle is diseased and lacks bloodflow. if you had those types of problems, you would have known about it by now. You are probably having anxiety like your mother is telling you, especially  if you have exams coming up.
