Athletics and heart related death....

hey everybody.well as a lot of you know i am a worrier and im only 13 yrs old.anyways i really love sports and want to play soccer and football this year. but i am very scared that something will happen to my heart and it will stop. nobody in my family has ever died of sudden cardiac death,i even looked it up in history books dating back to 1850 and up. i have only passed out once in my life and i wasnt active,i was just standing there and passed out. when i was six i had a heart murmur but it closed up. i noticed my heart only does things when i am active when i am thinking about stuff happening. the only reason i bring this up is because a local d-league basketball team player had an ekg and had some heart condition and it was in the newspaper.it also talked about how someone in the nba died on the court during a game. i have pvcs, and i get them when i am active but i dont notice unless i try to. anyways, please any information  will help.
thanks again

Having PVCs and a benign heart murmur in no way increase your chances of something bad happening to your heart during sports.

But, if you are still worried, please express your concerns to your doctor and ask for a simple ECG for reassurance.

Just worrying about your heart isn't helping you.  Figure out what will give you the reassurance that you need and then do that.  You need a plan of action so you will be able to get over this worry.  If this is only one of a pattern of worries that are troubling you, then please talk to a councelor at school so that you can learn how to manage your anxiety.

Best wishes to you!

If you have a healthy heart, or even a stable heart problem, you will become more healthy by doing sport.  Sitting around afraid for your life wont do you any good at all, you will just put on weight which is a lot riskier for your heart than exercise.

If you have a pre-existing heart condition get a check up, and get on with your life.  Seriously, a lot of murmurs and pvcs are completely benign.

Playing the odds statistically, people that are fit have longer healthier lives than people who tear themselves apart with anxiety and are afraid to go and live their lives.

The people who drop dead from sport generally have undiagnosed heart problems that they had no idea about.  If you know you have pvcs and a heart murmer, chances are you have been told this by a doctor.  If your particular condition was dangerous they would have HAD to do something about it, because it would be negligant not to.

I think you need to make a decision to go and see your doctor once and for all to get your mind at rest, and then just forget about it.

wait so your saying that my pvcs make it more possible for this to happen to me.and the heart murmur closed up,so how could that make it worse?

I believe that only hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a concern for sports...also being hit in the chest bt things such as baseballs could stop your heart....but you have to be hit extremely hard.  THey make protective vests though if you are worried about that.  Hopefully Brooke will come along and help...

A marathon in New York (USA) died during some warm-up or trial runs a year or two ago. He had an known enlarged heart.

Now, this is not to add to your concern/worry, just a confirmation that it does happen.

I recommend given you have a heart history, mummer, it could be a good idea to discuss with your doctor, better your cardiologist if you have one.  I expect they'll tell you to go forth and be active.  That's what they tell me and I have had open heart surgery to repair a valve.  And, I'm an old guy...

Stop worrying and enjoy life, it is all ahead of you.  You are the future.
