These are complication of portal hypertension (12 mm Hg or greater). Anyone one of these is an indication the patients has End-Stage Liver Disease (decompensated cirrhosis).
* About 90% of cirrhotics develop varices. Variceal bleeding happens in about 30% of patients with ESLD.
* Ascites
* Hepatic Encephalopathy
* Reduced platelet count or decreased white blood cell count.

I don't have any symptoms except a stomach bleed from the varicies in my stomach. The varicies in my throat and an aneurism on my spleen. Plus the Thrombosis they detected and other things they detected with a CT scan. I do have discomfort sometimes in my abdomen, but I don't know if that' sa symptom of it or not. I also get dizzy sometimes, but don't know what may be symptoms, or what isn't. I just know what they tell me.
What symptomps did you have?
Hello, tell me how acctually they diagnosed you with portal hypertension?
Yes, I believe that's it, the one Bill said. Do you know anyone who's taking it.
I probably couldn't get my doctor to prescribe it for me, anyway. I don't ever get to talk to the Liver Dr. anymore. Just my regular doctor and a PA about once or twice a year at Duke. My Doctor here talks to her about my case and her nurse said my Doctor,( I haven't actually talked to my doctor or anyone else yet since my last CT, except that conversion with the nurse over the phone) The nurse told me that the Doctor wanted to put me on another BP med. I'm trying to get in to see my Doctor as soon as possible. I can look at the reports over the internet of the things I have done at Duke. But, I had this one done at the hospital here so I wouldn't have to go all the way to Duke. Big mistake, I guess because now I can't look at the report. Oh wait I may be able to just pick up a report at my Doctors office or the hospital. But in the mean time i was trying to find out what I could about this so I can have some questions for my Doctor. The Thrombosis isn't new. But, it might be worse than it was in 11/ 04/ 2010. But, how could they compare them since I had them done in different Hospitals. I still believe that was a mistake.
Oh yes! I'd been meaning to ask you guys if you know what an splenic infarct is? That was something that developed after my coil embolization of the spenic artery.
Oh yes and I am planing to move closer to Duke if everything works out for me. That's a big IF though.
Bill, Actually I think FC may be thinking of losartan (Cozaar).
Only saw one study in Spain in 2009 with 14 patients. Nothing since.

I have never heard of its use here in the US to reverse scaring of the liver. Only used to decrease the risk of stroke in people who have high blood pressure and a heart condition.

'I was a bit behind ...'
SOP ;->
Good to see you online.
Hector
Sorry HectorSF, I was a bit behind and didn't notice you'd responded to this already.

Hi, You might be thinking of Losartan?
Have you discussed the ‘TIPS’ procedure as well?
--Bill
Hi. I am sorry to hear about your PVT.
So from what I understand you have stage 4 cirrhosis of the liver caused my hepatitis C. Is this correct?
Your doctor is a hepatologist that works at a local transplant center that performs liver transplants?
So you are already taking 10mg of propranolol for your portal hypertension caused by your portal vein thrombosis (PVT). Propranolol is the most commonly used drug for portal vein obstruction. Combined with endoscopic banding treatment they are the standard first line of treatment.
Do you know why she don't just increase the dosage?
Now she wants to add another beta blocker in addition to propranolol?
Has your doc talked to you about anticoagulation therapy?
I take Nadolol 20 mg per day for my typical cirrhotic portal hypertension. No thrombosis.
My doc wants my pulse rate to be about 60 bpm.
'But, what I really wondered about is that BP Med.that I've heard actually helps reverse Fibrosis in the liver.'
This is not true. Beta blockers slow down the heart so their is less portal hypertension. Beta blockers are used to prevent bleeding varices. They have nothing to do with fibrosis or liver disease per se. Have you bleed before? Have you been banded? If bleeding was a major problem they would perform a TIPS procedure to relieve the pressure. Having portal hypertension is a complication of cirrhosis of the liver. A cirrhotic liver can't regenerate itself as a liver with lesser degree of damage. Your liver scarred with is why you have portal hypertension. The only way to prevent more scarring to to remove the cause of your liver disease.
Cheers!
Hector
Are you treating? I cam barely read iPhone! Yikes!
