I was told that because the liver has no nerve endings it doesn't feel pain.
I had decompensated cirrhosis and almost died from it and never had pain in the area of my liver.
An enlarged liver can cause pain by pressing on other organs in the area.
However, I'm no doctor or medical expert all I know is what I've learned from my experience which is limited to hep C and cirrhosis or the liver.

Hector says the liver can radiate pain in that area, and he knows far more than I do.

If there is pain in my right upper quadrant and it is not caused by my intestines.stomach, pancreas, lungs or gallbladder and I have Hep C why on earth can it not be my liver?  You can get pain in the chest area when you have heart disease so why not pain in the right upper quadrant when you have liver disease?  Do any organs feel pain?

It is never 'normal' to feel pain in the upper right quadrant. Certainly not from the hepatitis C virus itself. The liver, stomach, gallbladder, pancreas and lung disease can all radiate pain in the upper right quadrant. Upper right quadrant pain should not be ignored, since it can indicate serious disease.

Make an appointment to see your gastroenterologist to diagnose the cause of the pain.

Good luck.

Hector

Well about halfway into tx I started noticing my liver. I would not call it pain, just a feeling that something is there or maybe larger? Doc felt my liver, thoght it was normal. there not worried. I was stage 0 grade 2 when I started.  Again I would not even classify this as pain.  But sometimes  I think maybe someday I will get a ultrasound and maybe a bx.  Because I was in a clinical trial w/o all the nasty sx.  Sometimes I wonder if maybe i am growing a tumor or something. I am 7 mo out of tx. and still notice something there, but not pain. Also I will try and include a link a friend gave me from Clinical care options or some such s--t. They were talking about how some can keep getting liver damage after SVR.... Hopefully I mis read it. Ill come back and add the link when I get it from my friend.

The liver has no nerve endings which doesn't mean you can't have pain in that area or have an enlarged liver which presses on other organs causing pain.

I found this on the net:
http://liverdisease.com/abdominalpain_hepatitis.html

Abdominal Pain and Liver Disease/Hepatitis

When diagnosed with hepatitis, patients often expect to feel pain over the liver.
And, in fact, many people with chronic hepatitis do experience abdominal pain or discomfort over the liver. .

Right upper quadrant pain, when due to the liver, occurs most commonly in the acute stages of liver disease, (inflammation of the liver that lasts less than six months), or during a flare - up of a chronic liver disease.  In these circumstances, the cause of this pain is due to acute inflammation, irritation, and distention of the liver’s surface.  Otherwise, the liver is rarely tender.

This type of pain should not automatically be attributed to a liver disorder – other causes should be investigated.  In fact, abdominal and right upper quadrant pain is rarely due to chronic liver disease.

Gallstones

Liver cancer may also cause abdominal or right upper quadrant pain

Stomach disorders, such as peptic ulcer disease (PUD) and gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining) often cause abdominal pain in people with liver disease

Intestinal pain must also be considered as a cause of abdominal or right upper quadrant pain

The pain is likely from the area around the inflamed liver.
The fact that the liver itself does not feel pain does not mean that you don't have real pain in the area that is related to your liver problems.

I had pain all of the time - that's what made me go to the doctor.  I already had cirrohsos/2 - I don't know if that makes a difference or not.  My doctor acted like it was normal.

It could be your gall bladder.
No, you can't feel your liver.
