Blood Test Results

Hello - I just had std blood tests done.  I have no indication of anything wrong but thought it a good idea to get tested.  I have had cold sores for over 15 years so I know I have HSV-1.  My IgG test results were:
Result: 42.1
Units: IV
Flag Reference: H

It states:
0.89 IV or less: Negative
0.9 - 1.09 IV: Equivocal
1.10 IV or greater: Positive IgG antibody to HSV

My doctor has indicated in voicemails that my tests were negative - so I am having trouble interpeting these results becuase they seem positive.  Can you help me understand?

you had a non-type specific test done for herpes which was a total waste of your time and money especially since you know you have hsv1 so it is automatically going to come back as +.   You will need to repeat your testing with type specific herpes igg blood testing in order to see what your hsv2 status is. no reason to test for hsv1 since you already know you have it. perhaps your provider will actually order the proper testing if you just ask them to test for hsv2.

encourage your provider to better update their herpes testing knowledge by reading the 2010 cdc herpes guidelines. they are doing their patients a HUGE disservice by ordering this way outdated testing.
