CMV help

My doctor diagnosed me with Acute CMV.  I have had an uncomfortable feeling in my left side under my rib cage for 5 weeks.  It seemed to be there before the other symptoms were and I still feel it three or four times a day for a little while.  The other symptoms I had when I was really feeling bad was fever, chills, night sweats, and other flu like symptoms.  Since the start of becoming sick I have lost around 10 pounds and seem to be holding at that weight.  The symptoms I have now are lighter night sweats, the uncomfortable abdominal area, uncomfortable feeling in the left side under rib cage, andI have been having more frequent stool (2 times daily) and it is lighter than normal and softer than normal.

Do I need to be concerned about gastrointestinal infection?  What is the treatment of an infection caused by CMV?  Is there a test I should ask my doctor to do to see if I have an infection?  How long are these symptoms going to last?

I would really appreciate some advice as I have been searching online and haven't found anything that tells me how long these symtoms from CMV and CMV infection can actually last, other than 2-4weeks and I am well past that.

Thank you.

Not many of us get thru life without cmv. It's an incredibly common infection.  For the most part it's just a regular ole viral infection.  It can be an issue for women who are pregnant or anyone who is immunocompromised.  Most times they don't even treat cmv in folks who are otherwise healthy.  Most times they don't even test for cmv because it' so common and most of us pick it up when we are children.

If you are still feeling crappy this far into things I"d definitely give your doctor a call tomorrow and talk more about it.  Sometimes cmv will cause mono which will really knock you on your butt.

Thank you both - I do have a follow up appointment - just wanted to be prepared since I've been at my doctors office 4 times in the last 5 weeks.  I'm in the wrong forum I guess so I'll move on.

Thanks again.

Hi there -

CMV can happen in patients without HHIV, but is more common in those with it.

This isn't the right forum to ask these questions in, in any case.  There isn't a specific CMV forum here, but you might try posting this in the Living With HIV forum and see what they can tell you.

I don't understand why you aren't asking your doctor these questions, since she is the one who made the diagnosis. Are you HIV positive? Isn't it unusual for a healthy adult to have CMV symptoms? That's my take on it, anyway.

You need to talk to your doctor about this stuff. Searching online for answers after having prolonged symptoms doesn't sound too smart.
