Can an esthetician get herpes by giving a facial?

I am currently in esthetician school and I usually give my cosmetologist friend a facial with extractions every so often. I did not use gloves while extracting (bad idea, I know) but used large cotton pads over my fingers so I wouldn't touch and pus that came up. The extractions were always around her cheeks nose and forehead, never near her mouth.Today she told me that she has had herpes in the mouth area since she was a child and that it wasn't contagious, but I am still afraid. While I had never touched any open lesions, the fact that I have been cleansing and massaging around the area has me very concerned. Is it possible to contract the virus this way? I have no symptoms, but still need to be sure.

Ps..cold sores are not transmitted through blood. While you're extracting..You're possibly being exposed to blood! While I did extractions in school Each time there was a little blood. There are far worse to worry about when being exposed to blood. Always wear gloves!

I know this is an old post however I'll answer anyway. I'm in school as well. If there isn't an sore. Then don't worry. If this was the case you wouldn't be able to work on anyone since most of the human population have been exposed. Be prepared that most of your clients will have been exposed. If you see a sore than you reschedule your clients for after it has cleared as you don't want to accidentally spread it to their eye. You should really speak to your instructor about this. There is such a stigma with cold sores. It's better to really get educated on the statistics. And I agree check with your dr and find out your status chances are you were exposed a while back and don't even know it as most people get it when they are children.

1 out of every 2-3 people you know has hsv1 orally. it's incredibly common. have you ever been tested for it yourself to know your own status?

is this a risk for you? no it is not.

You are in school to learn, follow the rules and wear your gloves to protect yourself as well as your clients!!
