HSv1 cold sore transmission time?

Hello -

I broke out with a cold sore on Monday and I've been following a strict regimen of using lysine and abreva to get rid of the sore.

Today is Friday and the sore has already crusted over and shed (I'm surprised at how quickly it's happened!) Now I only have a small red dot that's healing. I am going to see my BF next week for vacation, which at that point will have already been 8 days since it appeared. I am scared that I am transmit the virus to him. What is the likelihood of transmitting it, if it's completely cleared up by then?  I was thinking of getting valtrex from my doctor to help reduce the transmission rate as a preventive measure.

Any thoughts on whether it'll still be contagious by next week? Thank you!

Thank you for your response Grace.

I've been tested for HSV2 a few times and it's always come back negative. I'm not sure if my boyfriend has been tested but I will speak to him about it.

I'm happy to hear that it's no longer active. I have found that the valtrex helped even more.

I was worried that I would go on vacation and that it would still be contagious and I would transmit it to him (if he doesn't have it).

So I should be in the clear?

it's been more than 72 so it's worthless to take valtrex at this point. Your skin is healing at this point and it's not likely the virus is still active and shedding.

has your bf been tested to know his status? if not, that's a very important step to take. also if you haven't been tested to know your hsv2 status, you need to do that too.

next time, start the valtrex in the cold sore dose at the very first sign of a cold sore about to start. You can often cut it off completely!

Thank you. My doctor was able to prescribe me valtrex to complete the healing process.

The Dr. Mentioned I should be fine by then especially if the sore is completely healed.

Thank you for your response.

Hi, if its completly healed its not a risk. Taking meds is a good idea if your having multiple outbreaks.
