your husband will need tested to know his status. just because he doesn't get obvious cold sores, doesn't mean he isn't hsv1+. statistically at least 1 of you has hsv1. it's THAT common!
shingles just inside the mouth area would be very unusual. it tends to present on the face and not the mouth.
you can have other issues present like that including wheat allergies, too much acidic fruit, cinnamon flavorings ( from gums, toothpastes and mouthwashes ) etc. since your kids were also sick at the same time, you could've had an enterovirus oral infection too.
Thank you Grace. This is very helpful. The positive IGMs scared me and my neurologist so much that today he referred me to a infectious disease doctor. Unfortunately, they had no space until December 22nd. No, my husband does not get cold sores.
I saw a dermatologist when I had the sores who just told me that it was "perhaps" shingles or some other weird autoimmune illness. He referred me back to my neurologist who said the autoimmune issue wasn't was caused the mouth sore.
It seems like to me that based on your posting and others I have read, that the IGM results are not indicative of anything really. That I will have to wait a few months and then re-take the IGG tests. Until then, the divorce is on hold! ( :
Sorry about posting questions that are not helpful to you under your question.
as an adult, oral herpes is almost exclusively transmitted through romantic type kisses, not from sharing beverages.
mouth sores inside the mouth typically are canker sores and not oral herpes. canker sores are not contagious. not sure if mom had sores in her mouth or cold sores from your description.
A newly acquired oral herpes infection might not show up on a blood test for a few more months yet. It's unfortunate a lesion culture of your active symptoms wasn't done when you had them instead of blood testing.
at this point you honestly might never figure out what caused your symptoms. Many viral illnesses out there that can cause extensive mouth sores. If you continue to get them, certainly pursue further testing to try to figure out what is going on. does your husband get cold sores at all?
