HSV I/II Igm early indicator spot on

In April I got tested for Both HSV I and II, both were negative, except my combo results were .94.   (.91 > was negative)

My doctor said I must have just been infected.  Did a lot of online research and discovered that the Igm combo test was not too reliable.

I just followed up with the exact same test, four months later.  I tested positive for HSV I and negative for HSV II, so apparently the combo test was spot on.

My girlfriend and I both recently tested positive for HSV I and negative for HSV II.

1. If we both remain in a monogamous relationship and have unprotected sex, can we create or give each other HSV II?

2. How do we know where our HSV I infection resides, above or below the belt or both areas? Does it really matter?

3. Should we start taking valtrex or any other medicine?

4. Are there any other issues we should be concerned with?

Thanks for all your comments!

First off - neither of you should be getting igm's done. They are a very inaccurate test for herpes and you absolutely, positively can not be assuming you have herpes or being diagnosed as having herpes from them!    http://www.medhelp.org/posts/show/248394  is a prior post by HHH that goes into details as to why it's a poor test and why to ignore its results.

for under $3, your provider can order the herpes blood testing toolkit from www.ashastd.org to get up to date info on herpes blood testing - they obviously need a refresher course on it!

Your gf has hsv1. you do not. You do not have to continue taking any valtrex.  should you get an obvious cold sore then yes but odds are that you really don't have hsv1.  The two of you should discuss about precautions for when she performs oral sex on you too.

I must have spoken to soon, after speaking with the nurse over the phone and finally picking up my results this morning.

In April 09 I was <0.91 negative for HSV I and<0.91 negative for HSV II, my HSV IgM I/II combo was .94 Equivocal

On August 4, 09, I was <0.91 negative for HSV I and <0.91 negative for HSV II, my HSV IgM I/II combo INCREASED to 1.00 Equivocal.

In April 09 my girlfriend tested positive for HSV I IgG at 2.26 and her HSV II was negative at <0.91 and her combo was 1.76

I am offically confused.  Do I have HSV I and or II, if not will I be getting I or II in the near future?

In the past 4 months I thought I was getting a cold sore and I have taken 500 mg of Valtrex about 10 times.  Could that have affected my results and kept them negative even though I am positive?

Thank you for all your help.

One of you  would have to be + for hsv2 in order for the other to get it. If you have both tested negative for hsv2 several months after last having had sex with any other partners, then hsv2 is not a part of your relaitonship.

what was your 2nd hsv1 test results?  did you have an igm test again or what?

No reason to take valtrex.  You both have hsv1. Neither of you are having obvious symptoms to treat. it's not an issue in this relationship.
