Herpes Transmission

I am a 42 year old female who has been married for 21 years.  My husband and I started dating in high school and married a few years later.  We have both been with only 1 other partner back in high school.  Last year my husband had his first cold sore.  He got another one about 5 or 6 weeks ago.  I have never had any cold sores or any other genital issues.  I do know we had sex and I performed oral sex on him, not vice versa.  His cold sore is mild looking, so I almost don't even notice it and he rarely complains about it.  It is easy to forget it is there, you really need to look to see it.

About 4 weeks ago, I began itching in my vaginal area.  I thought it was a yeast infection because I had come off of antibiotics a few weeks earlier.  It hurt for about a week or so and then went away.  About 2 weeks ago it returned and has been much more painful.  I had a urine culture done which showed enterococcus bacteria in my urine.  My ob/gyn put me on several antibiotics which did nothing for the pain and burning.  I made an appointment for yesterday for a urogynecologist.  The doctor examined me and told me she thinks I have herpes.  She even called another doctor in and they looked and both said most likely.  They also said my cervix looked a little off and that I need to get a pap done soon.  I am totally freaked out by this.  Could I have HSV1 genitally from my husband's cold sore??  I know he has been faithful as well as I, but I can't imagine having HSV2 for more than 20 years ago and just get an outbreak now.  It seems too coincidental with his cold sore outbreak.  I was also very sick with Lyme disease several years ago and I believe it would have reared its head at that point since I was so immune depressed.

What do you think??  The doctor did a culture and ran bloodwork for hsv1 IGG and IGM and hsv2 IGG and IGM.  I am hoping they may clue me a little as to when I may have gotten this.

Hi Grace,

Just a follow up, I received my information back from the urogynecologist today and they told me that all of my bloodwork and the lesion culture were negative.  They said I have the hsv1 IGG and IGM tests and also hsv2 IGG AND Igm.  What does this mean?
Am I in the clear.  The area is better than before and I had 2 really good days, but last night it began to itch and be painful again.  I am on my last few days of Valtrex.  What do you think?

the igm herpes blood test is a poor test in general for herpes so if it comes back +, it's still meaningless.  don't be surprised if your hsv1igg is + since hubby has hsv1, you very well could too.

At this point you could've contracted hsv2 ( or hubby could've ) with your prior partner back in the day but odds are that neither of you did.  yes this could be hsv1 genitally but I'm guessing you have something else going on to be honest. continue to follow up with the urogynecologist for further work up to try to figure out what is going on.
