Just wanted some advice.

I was with someone for four years who had herpes. I honestly have no clue if it's hsv1 or 2. We had a lot of unprotected sex and I have two children by him. I had no clue in the beginning because he knew and wasn't honest. When I heard rumors I got tested, when he stopped denying it I got tested, and when I found out I was pregnant I got tested. I never had a positive result. Recently, I started talking to a guy and he's heard about my ex having it. He asked if I had it, and I said no I've been tested multiple times I'm negative. So I told him I would get tested for everything again and we can check out each others paperwork so we are both comfortable with getting involved. Ater I talked to him I started researching because I realized I probably didn't know as much about herpes as I should and I discovered that I had a lot of misconceptions, and now I'm not so confident I don't. One of those is that you absolutely do not have it unless you have an outbreak within a month or so after contact with the infected person. If I do have it, it's asymptomatic as far as any type of outbreaks goes, but I do feel frequent tingling in my genital region. I was pretty naive about the subject before, and I have absolutely no clue what tests were used and how accurate they were. I just new they were negative and I was good to go. The only thing I do remember from the beginning of our relationship was having painful canker sores, but at that time I had braces and assumed that's what it was from. I've also heard a lot of people with  hsv have tingling, so that's makes me think it's definitely more likely. I'm going to my gyn on monday, and after all the confusion of recently realizing I pretty much new absolutely nothing that I thought I knew, I would like some advice on exactly what to ask my dr. so I can get the most accurate results.

Yes i understand that. I mentioned the difference because if its hsv1 and youve never had an outbreak it is so common that you may have acquired it in childhood.

That's not necessarily true. You can get 1 or 2 orally or genitally. Might not be as common to get hsv 1 genitally or hsv 2 orally but they can be passed to both areas of the body. Anyways, I'll know thursday what the results are.

You need to find out if is its hsv1 or 2. if its i then  you picked it u as a child if its 2 then its from sexual activity.

Personal question, are you still with the same person as when you found out. I just worry about how this is going to effect me ever meeting someone. I'm a single mom and I have two kids and that's pretty much all I have time for right now, but at some point in the future I would like to date and I have no clue how that's all going to pan out for me.

Okay, if that's the case then it was not the igg type specific test, it was another type of test. I won't have the paperwork for a couple weeks as it will be coming in the mail so I can't see exactly what it says. I talked to the nurse on the phone. I'm guessing it was some type of combo test, which I have heard are pretty unreliable. It's not that I'm in denial because I'm fully aware it's a big possibility. I have just heard so much conflicting information and I want to know for sure either way. I've even heard there is issues with the accuracy of the igg type specific test. That's what I got today and I should have the results back by thursday.

that dosent make sense. If you take the igg specific thats what it means it tells you hsv1 or hsv2.

Okay, so I found out some not so good news. I was kind of prepared, but it's still a little rough hearing it. I got tested early last year and apparently was positive, but somehow my doctors office failed to inform me. I'm pretty sure they did an igg but I dont think it was type specific because it read that my levels were at 2.3 for hsv 1 and/or  2. Any thoughts on that? I was under the assumption with all that I've read that you wont test positive for both because once you get either one, your body makes the antibodies against it, and it's pretty rare or impossible to get the other type. I got tested again today and requested the type specific igg antibody test, so I guess we will see.

If you test 3 months after exposure the tests are very  reliable if you have them done with your famitly doctor and with no breakouts would be very reliable,

So, that should be pretty conclusive? I've read a lot of conflicting information about various tests and how accurate they are. I just don't want to get a false negative, mislead someone...then they get it and hate me for life!

Hi, you need the herpes igg type specific antibodies test and if you score below 1 you negative.
