UNABLE TO READ TEST RESULTS

Now that I have the results, I'm unable to read it. I have scheduled an appointment to speak with my physician but I won't be able to see him until next week. It was agonizing process waiting for the results to begin with and now I'm very upset because I don't understand it too clearly. Why can't they make these results easier to read for the average person? Do I have it? If so, which type do I have? I would appreciate your input.

Oh hon - that sounds so much like anxiety.  Herpes wouldn't cause any of that.

You would count from the last time you had unprotected sex for the HIV test.  About 95% of folks will test positive by 6 weeks, and the rest by 3 months, so test at 6 weeks if it will make you feel better.

Keep in mind that less than 1% of people in the US have HIV, and chances are your partner didn't either.  Unless he's used needles for drug use or had sex with men, he's really not at risk for HIV.

Would someone please answer these questions for me. I'm not sure if this is now the correct place post thess questions. As I menitoned before on 11/19/08 my symptoms have stopped. This is not true. I'm now noticing my symptoms are now intermittent. The will show up every other day or every other other day.  My friend tells me the symptoms could also be caused by anxiety. While I was going through these symtions and to set my mind at ease, I requested to take another HIV test 11/18/08 and the results were still negative. My first HIV test was taken on 10/30/2008 which of course was also negative.

Diarreah (very soft stool but not liquid)
Unexplained Rash
Chest Sweats (just around the chest area never around my head).
Weight Loss (8lbs within a month)
Chest pains
Stomach pain
Sever back pain
Waking up in the middle of the night. (then only taking 1 hour interval naps in order to get some sleep in).
White tounge

My question is can a person have HSV2 and HIV at the same time?  Does one take longer to show up positive than the other?  Should I be able to count the day I was positive for HSV 2 as the time I was exposed to HIV? The reason why I ask this is if I test negative again this time around, technically I have another month (going by the 3 month window) to be clear. I do plan on taking another test the next following 3 months to be absolutely sure. I've read on line that it can take up to 6 months to be 100% or even 2-3 weeks.

No abe the results posted were fine and are clearly + for hsv2.

LOL unsure about the applying to be your bedbuddy with references part :)

Hang in there and keep asking questions as you have them and we'll try to help you. All the other symptoms you've mentioned are not due to hsv but as I said sounds like anxiety. follow up on them with your provider if they aren't better within the next week or two.

OK  so it says that you are positive for herpes but it still does not give you an exact figure for the HSV 2 which is greater than 1.10. Call your Doctor back and ask him/her to talk to the lab and request a specific numeric test result for HSV 1 and HSV 2. It will read something like this. HSV 1 igg is .80 and HSV 2 igg is 4.50 or whateever it says. Once you have the exact figures then post them on the board so grace can help you confirm if you do or do not need more testing. If the Doc cannot give you exact figures then ask him to call the lab to redo the test from your blood and provide you with the exact numeric values so you can post them for grace..

Yes, I had the IGG test performed in order to be absolutely sure. The results are listed below. It's conclusive that I only have HSV-2 for the moment. I'm praying that's all that will show up in the next couple of months.

HERPES AB TYPE 1 IGG                              0.27
                     (*** REFERENCE VALUES ***)
                     (Negative: Less than 0.90)
                     (Equivocal: 0.90-1.10)
                     (Positive: Greater than 1.10)

HERPES AB TYPE 2 IGG     GREATER THAN 5.0
                     (*** REFERENCE VALUES ***)
                     (Negative: Less than 0.90)
                     (Equivocal: 0.90-1.10)
                     (Positive: Greater than 1.10)

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the person who created this site and you grace. The information provided has been very helpful. Because of this site, I don't feel like I'm the only one going through this. It's sad to say you have to treat the person you want to love as if you're applying for a loan. You just can't take their word for it on their STD status. You must ask for proper documentation (a recent STD result) and 2 references (speak to the last 2 people they've had sex with).

So they repeated the blood test with the proper igg test? Do you know the numeric results of the test?

The hiv test needs to be done 3 months from the last time you had sex.

All of your symptoms sound like anxiety - I wouldn't start thinking that you have hiv based on them.

I received my test results from my doctor. the IGG results shows that I am only HSV 2 positive. I've come to terms with it. When I took my test in October 30th, it showed up negative for HIV and positive for HSV (I started feeling HSV symptoms earlier that month around October 7th) but doing some research on line when I started noticing other symptoms such as diarrhea, unable to sleep well or waking up in the middle of the night, chest sweats, lower back pain, chest pain, and rapid heart palpitations (the only thing I haven't experienced is a high fever which they say should be around 100 degrees or more).

My friend tells me those symptoms could also be caused by anxiety. As of today 11/19/2008 the symptoms have stopped. I requested to take another HIV test yesterday.  My question is can a person have herpes and HIV at the same time?  Does one take longer to show up positive than the other?  Should I be able to count the day I was positive for HSV 2 as the time I was exposed to HIV? The reason why I ask this is if I test negative again this time around, technically I have another month (going by the 3 month window) to be clear. As daisy already said, the igm herpes test is pretty much useless and should've never been drawn on you in the first place. You need to totally disregard the results and get a more accurate test done. Start with a herpes igg now and if it's been less than 4 months since the last time you had sex, you'll need to repeat it again later. Your provider has erred in using this test on you and in trying to tell you you are infected with herpes from it.

http://www.medhelp.org/posts/show/248394  is a terrific prior post on the herpes igm and why it shouldn't be used by Dr Handsfield on the std expert forum.  If your provider argues with you as to why the test they used was right, I suggest that they hit the journals and update their reading.

I just came from my doctors and he was able to confirm that I genital herpes. He took another test again today to be absolutely sure.  He was able to pull additional documentation from my original lab results. This is how it read:

Service:Herpes Simples Virus IgM AB
HSV IGM AB TITER              >=1:160                 ()
        Reference range: <1:10

Any second opinions would be appreciated. Newly acquiring this disease has put me in shock,  I believe I'm going through the denial stages. Would anyone have any idea how to cope with this? The idea of becoming a hermit really isn't appealing to me right now at this point in life. A possible support group?

It looks like you had an IgM test done, which is pretty much useless (they are just not accurate).  Your physician should have never ordered it.  I would recommend getting retested using a type-specific IgG blood test, such as HerpeSelect.  Labs, such as Quest and LabCorp routinely use this test.
Good luck,
Em
