You may be thinking that HSV1 means oral herpes and HSV2 is genital. Not true. HSV1 and HSV2 are the virus types. Either of them can infect the genital area. However, having had HSV1, you are immune (or at least highly resistant) to new HSV1 infecrtions anywhere on the body. And oral infections with HSV2 are rare, so even if you are correct in your "diagnosis" that your partner had oral herpes ("cold sore"), you are not at risk for genital herpes from this event.
