Can herpes travel up the penis?

I'm currently at the start of a potential herpes scare, as I recently developed some painful redness and skin cracking/ulceration at the head of my penis. However, I'm a bit confused as I have only had about a combined 20-25 sexual experiences, in the last two years (but not in the last six months), between three different women whose status I didn't know (before that I was in a monogamous relationship and tested negative for HSV-1 and 2, have been in a monogamous relationship since March). However, I always wore a condom for intercourse and only engaged in unprotected oral (which I've heard is a real longshot risk for genital herpes). Since most of what I've read says that outbreaks happen at the point of infection, how could I have a potential herpes outbreak toward the end of my penis? Based on this (and the fact that the doctor said he didn't think it looked like herpes but wanted to test anyway), is this unlikely to be herpes?

I'm pretty worried, as I am six months into a new relationship and don't want this to derail things.

Doesn't sound like hsv. That being said I would have your Dr or dermatologist take a look.
