can I pass the Herpes virus to others from a baby who has been born with Herpes and Hydrancephaly

My daughter gave birth to a daughter who was born with a strain of herpes - don't know what strain - can't find out - she says she contracted it from being exposed to shingles during early part of her pregnancy - the baby was also born with hydrancephaly - did the herpes cause the babies condition?  Can I pass the herpes virus to others such as my other grandchildren, pregnant women in my family, or newborns in my family.  I am afraid to visit my newborn great neice or go to another neices baby shower for fear of passing it on.  I have been with the baby when she was born and am afraid also of passing it to me other grandchildren etc etc.  Could I have contracted the herpes from just being around her?  I have stayed secluded because I don't know if I can pass it or not - as far as I know I have never had the virus but haven't been tested since the birth of my granddaughter.

No I am not a doctor. This is the patient to patient forum.

We don't always know exactly why brain defects develop. Sometimes there isn't a clear cause :(    Far more than just herpes viruses that can cause these sorts of birth defects.

My granddaughter's brain was developing normally at 5 months gestation - no more sonograms were taken as there were no known problems.  At birth it was discovered she only had a brain stem and part of the cerebellum - my daughter says exposure to shingles caused this - could this be the truth? The baby now 3 months of age also has herpes/complex or simplex - not sure which).  I've done a lot of searching and found that the only way the brain could have been destroyed like this is if my daughter was exposured to Genital Herpes late in her pregnancy.  She says she and her partner do not have Herpes.  How else could this have happened.  This is driving me crazy!  BTW - are you a doctor?

You do not have to worry about you contracting anything from your granddaughter and transmitting it to others.  If she has birth defects caused by your daughter having shingles during pregnancy, she is not contagious. Also if you've had chicken pox in the past, you are immune.

So sorry to hear that your grand daughter was born ill - I hope she is fairing well even though she was born with medical problems :)
