Thanks everyone. I'm checking if a more accurate test is possible.
perhaps look around to see if there is a herpes support group online locally and ask them for a suggestion of a provider who will do the testing you need?
You are being tested I am sure using an older test which is based on an IgM and maybe not the more accurate IgG testing. You should look into a herpes support group or ask your doctor if they know of any private labs that will offer a type specific igg test. You may have to pay out of pocket for such testing.
thanks for the response. Yes, I did get checked thoroughly and all came back negative, except they didn't have hsv on the list. I've been paranoid about it for the past couple months and decided to get tested but the doctors here (I don't live in North America) just don't want to give a test that differentiates between hsv1 and 2 unless the patient has a symptom. I'm scared but I guess I'll just have to cope with it when the time really comes.
thanks for responding. The problem is, I don't live in north america and the testing system here seems totally different. but the doctor said I had a pretty high number (under 4 is regarded negative and I had 16; it is said that 80% of the whole population here would show 8-16). The doctor refused to test further and she just didn't want to talk about it when I posed her the same question, which made me think what I was fearing was true...
whether or not a partner ejaculates or not has nothing to do with your std risk!
did you get full std testing done including chlamydia and gonorrhea testing done?
have you had your gardasil shots yet too?
if you had a blood test that doesn't tell you what type you have then your provider completely wasted your time and money :( You need to repeat your testing with a type specific herpes igg blood test that does differentiate between hsv1 and hsv2 in order for it to tell you anything at all about your status. ask your provider to credit you for the wrong test they ordered and ask them to order you the right testing!

Ask for a copy of your results and post them here so we can help you. It should have a number like HSV1 4.5, 2.3, or HSV2 2.3, 1.6.
Many low positives are actually negative, so in this case you should pursue confirmatory testing.
It's possible to contract herpes when losing virginity, because all sexual encounters might eventually lead to transmission when someone is infected. Still, the risk of transmission is very low for a single encounter.
