suppression therapy timeframe

My spouse and I are trying to conceive, and since he has had outbreaks in the past when I am fertile, he has agreed to try suppression therapy.

My question is - how long does it take for suppression therapy to be effective?

I've read a lot of posts, and I understand it doesn't work 100% of the time, and that you may have to try different drugs until you find the best fit for you, and that shedding can still occur even if there is no outbreak.

I have not seen anywhere information on how long you need to take the drugs for them to have a suppressive effect.

Thank you!

Suppressive therapy is effective after 5 days of starting it if it was started when no symptoms were present.

since your partner has hsv2 and you don't, there are a few guidelines to consider. First off, his taking daily suppressive therapy will help cut your risk of contracting hsv2 from him by half!  It really is effective as well as it will mean less recurrences for him so less disruptions to your sex life.  He should remain on daily suppressive therapy until after your baby is born to help lower your risk of contracting hsv2 while pregnant.

when you do become pregnant - make sure you seek out a type specific herpes igg blood test at the start of your pregnancy to see what your status is. Since most people who contract hsv2 are unaware of their infection until tested, don't assume no symptoms means you do not have it. You also should repeat your herpes igg blood test at the start of your 3rd trimester to see what your status is.  Hsv2 contracted during the 3rd trimester is the highest risk to your pregnancy so you can also consider adding condoms to your sex life until your pregnancy has ended to help lower your risk of contracting hsv2. Should you develop any symptoms of herpes while pregnant, be sure to be seen within 48 hours of their appearance for a lesion culture and typing to confirm infection and go from there.

best of luck getting pregnant quickly!!
