Post abortion - please help

I had an incomplete medical abortion at the beginning of November and have since been back to the hospital for two check ups where I was told the products would reabsorb naturally. I started bleeding the week before Christmas having stopped three weeks or so after the abortion. I assumed this bleeding was a period and thought nothing of it however I have been bleeding since. The bleeding varies in quantity, from spotting to flooding. Now I am suffering from mild to moderate lower abdominal and lower back pain, my bleeding has lessened to a brownish red discharge which is foul smelling and I am concerned. I have been suffering from a mild fever. Please help.

Well you're definitely NOT being punished! It sounds to me like you caught an infection from the evacuation. It is definitely a risk when that is done. I've had two miscarriages and it as hard to not beat myself up about it but in the end it truly was out of my hands and there was nothing I did to deserve it. Likewise there is nothing you've done to deserve this either. Please keep us posted!

I agree with Joy, it does sound like an infection setting in...Is there an emergency room near by that you could go to, to be seen? If the bleeding starts to come any heavier, I would definately go get seen...Like Joy said if it fills a pad a hour...Good luck, and so sorry that you are going through this..I hope it gets better for you

Thank you for the reply - it's nice to have some level-headed advice when I'm feeling upset!

The whole thing has been horrendous. I feel like I'm being punished.

Thank you for your help.

Yes I'm thinking infection as well. Stay hydrated and rest until you can get to see the doctor. Check out "when to call your doctor or go to the emergency clinic" to see what symptoms you and your loved one need to watch for over the weekend. Also keep your vagina clean (no sex, if you have a squirt bottle you may want to flush warm water on the outside of your vagina to keep things clean, etc.).

I'm so sorry you are going through this. It is hard enough to lose a baby then have to experience such a horrible recovery. *HUGS*

I took a pill but this was unsuccessful. I ended up being admitted to hospital as an emergency case, where I had an evacuation without anaesthetic. I spent a week and a half in hospital recovering and had to have a blood transfusion. I am not flooding at that rate now but I was in the week running up to Christmas.

The doctor won't be open until Monday now. It's four in the morning and I can't sleep, I should have done something about this earlier today, it's been building up and I've been reading on the internet - bad idea - and am concerned about infection.

If you have to change your pad more than once in an hour you need to report to a hospital immediately.

By medical abortion do you mean you took a pill or did they do a D&C? If they did a D&C there is a chance of infection.

You could either just be sick with an upcoming flu or have an infection (foul smells and fever typically mean an infection). I don't know how medical stuff is done in the UK but if your doctor's office is open tomorrow I'd call with the concerns.
