high hcg level - no yolk sac or pole

axn
I am trying to figure out how to use this forum. I posted this question already, but to the wrong "community" i think. Anway. Looking for insight that anyone may have on my situation.
Age 37
HCG level: 23,000  (Jan 27)
Vaginal ultrasound on Jan 29 showed a gestational sac... but no pole or 'yolk sac.'
So, doctor had my HCG levels tested that day (Jan 29) -- they came in at ~25,000.

Since the HCG levels didn't double like they should, and there was no sign of the yolk sac, the doctors and nurse are pretty much preparing me for a miscarriage. They have me coming back a week later for a follow-up U/S ... but again, they have pretty much said it looks like a miscarriage.
Any thoughts?

I am sorry you are going through this.  I know how frustrating and heartbreaking it can be wondering what's going on.  Once HCG levels go over a certain level ( I believe somewhere around 15000 or so)  they are no longer expected to double in 48 -72 hours, but they would be expected to rise quite a bit in 96 hours.  Have they checked your progesterone levels?  At this point that level and u/s would be a better indicator than hcg of what's going on...unless the hcg levels started dropping.  I had brown spotting for a few days and then it stopped, and at 7 weeks I had an empty sac.  I was told to wait 3 weeks for another u/s, which still showed an empty sac.  Did they tell you at this point they would expect to see at the least a yolk sac?  If there was a yolk sac it would sound more promising.  I hope when you go back though you get some happy news...it's been known to happen.  Good luck.

Just know that bleeding and cramps especially in early pg are a normal side affect. I hope you get great news. Good luck and let me know what happens!

thanks for your quick replies. hopefully i'll be back with good news... but i'm not feeling all that optimistic.
with the brown discharge that's occuring now (minor spotting) I have very mild cramps. In fact, I'm not even sure if they are "imagined' cramps or real... I'm so paranoid it's hard to say at this point.

I just read your other post and I see that they estimated you at around 6 weeks. As for the brown discharge that could just be old blood, a lot of women spot in early pregnancy. I would just try and stay calm until your next visit (easier said than done). I have also read where some womens numbers don't always double. I wish you the best and please let us know what happens.

I'm sorry you have to go through this. I don't want to undermine what your dr's said but I went through an issue with seeing the hb and I went back the next week and there it was. I don't want to give you false hope but they could be wrong. Have you had any bleeding or cramping etc? I'm sorry you have to play the waiting game.  I know it's scary and just awful. I wish you the best. Let me know what happens. Good luck.

Ps There is no specific way to use the forum. Your post was great. I hope we can bring you some support. Welcome to the miscarriage forum.
