I had a miscarriage in August 2010, at 5 weeks. It was uneventful, no worse than a period, but my doctor wanted me to come in to make sure that "everything came out." He did a transvaginal ultrasound, which confirmed that I had a complete miscarriage.

I had my second miscarriage in January 2011, which resulted in a D&C. I bled very heavily (sometimes passing clots as big as baseballs) for 11 days, trying to do it on my own, before my doctor encouraged me to have the surgery. He told me that prolonged bleeding (a heavy flow more than a few days) is a good indicator that the uterus is not clamping down enough to expell the contents.

Sorry for your loss. I think you can consider a m/c over once your hcg levels go back down to zero. At that point all the tissue and hormones should be out of your body, I can imagine. I would definitely put a call into your doc to see what their definition of "over" is. Mine wanted to keep tabs on me till my levels were down. This way they can monitor you incase of any complications.

I think it depends on how far along you were at the time of the loss.  With my first mc I had a d&c and then went back to the doc 2 weeks later for a check up to make sure everything was back to normal.

With this last m/c I was only 6 weeks along by dates but my hcg was really too low for me to be that far along. I went back 2 days later for bloodwork and it was even lower. The nurse said I'd m/c and that I didn't need to come back unless there were complications.  I bled for a couple days and then stopped.  Then a few days later I bled some more.  It's been about a week now since I've bled, so I'm assuming that it is over.

I'm not going back to the doctor since I didn't have any complications, and b/c my doctor said I didn't need to follow up.  But, if you are not sure you can always go in and have them check to see that your hcg is back to 0.  After reading here for a while, I think that every woman is differnt in what they experience.

you are scheduled to see a Dr after a miscarriage to make sure there is no left over tissue, usually the Dr will let you know, and when the bleeding stops too is a good indicator. sorry for your loss :(
