History of diagnosing MS----before the MRI

I am trying to find some literature on the history of MS and how the disease was diagnosed before the invention of the MRI.  I have heard the stories of being placed in hot water but there must be some other criteria that was used.
The MRI came into being in the early 80's and by then there were many with MS.

The MRI is now the definitive test for a diagnosis.   We now have text book cases of MS that perfectly fit the current theory---# of lesions, size and shape of lesions location etc.  If you fit the criteria--you will be helped, if not you will not be treated.

Someday the MRI will be outdated and there will be other ways to diagnose but I am afraid it won't happen in my lifetime.  I really want to do something about this as far as research and activism.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
thanks!

Hi ess,  I have been googling this using different words off and on for a couple of weeks.  So I just googled it again and found an article by Quix that was very good.

Go figure.

Quix can tell you lots about this. She knows how good neuros sensed or predicated lesions just based on physical examination and statements of patients.

Hope she sees this.
