Ashley's Update

Hi all,

I'm was a little aprehensive about this post because of all the recent struggles that many of you are currently up against, so I hesitated a few days.  That being said, I thought those of you that have been following Ashley's battle with ovca would appreciate an update.  The week of April 15, Ashley had her "Make a Wish" fulfilled and we all went to Waikiki Beach for a week.  I could write pages about the experience, but let's just say the islands are absolutely beautiful and we all had a really good time.  Ashley in fact bought herself a Tiffany necklace as a souvenir with the little blue box and white ribbon to boot.  The trip was good for her soul.  This was quickly followed by Prom Night.  A horrible night for me (Over protective Dad), but a very nice night for her (with her fresh Hawian tan and light yellow prom dress).  I told her she was a heart breaker and she said "yea right dad".  I told her "right daughter, you are already breaking MY heart"!!!  Anyway she had a scan on 4/23/08.  The scan showed that a piece of the medi-port was in fact left behind, but does not need to be removed unless it bothers her.  I told her it is up to her on her terms if she wants it removed, but she seemed to express that she is not to happy leaving this foreign object in her body, who can blame her.  So another surgery will be in her future, but on her terms.  The doctor said the scan itself could not be any better.  The cyst they have been following for a year seems to be Gone!!!  Everything looks clear in her abdomin and chest and her blood counts and tumor markers are normal.  If fact they said by looking at her, you would never know she was sick a day in her life.  They moved her from 3 month scans to 6 month scans.  Her next in the end of September.  Then they gave her very encouraging news.  If the scans continue to produce results like this last scan, she will have one more this year, two more next year, then just come in once a year with no scan.  This was wonderful news for her putting her closer to putting all of this behind her.  We are all relieved and estatic about the news, and although my heart breaks for the many, many of you that are going through trying times right now, I just had to share the news with all of you.  Hope it brings you some happiness and encouragement.

Take Care and God Bless,
Bob

Hi Bob,

So very happy to hear about your wonderful trip to Hawaii and her prom night and all! She deserves every special thing that comes her way as well as a the normal stuff a teenager should enjoy! Also happy to hear maybe you all can not have her OC be the center of your life. God bless her and your family! Your friend up the thruway.

Bob, that is amazingly wonderful news.  I always said that girl should be concentrating on Proms and colleges and now she is.  I hope that all of this will be put behind her and she can have a normal young adult life.  Of course, she will be way ahead of the pack in the wisdom dept with everything she has been through, but that will only serve her in the future to make good choices when ohers aren't.  Congratulations to Ashley for fighting the good fight and to you Bob for being the kind of support system everyone deserves to have.
Love,
Jan

Wonderful news, as a parent I can understand the Joy and Relief you are feeling now.  Ashley is so young to have had to face this terrible disease, she was never alone, you are to be commended for being a really great Dad.  The strength and courage you have portrayed, along with her, is a shining example to others. I pray that her future now, will always be free and full.   marty

What great great news!!!! I remember way back when all this transpired and how sad I was for you as a parent especially since I am a parent to 2 young girls also...I am so  so happy for all of you ....Ashley is a beautiful girl and I am sure she must have took your breath away Prom night...There are so many women on here that you have given so much encouragement to by telling your story....Ashley made a good choice picking out a TIffany necklace as that is one of my favorite stores...She deserves it!!! May God continue to bless you and your family....Gia :)

I'm so glad to hear from you. Especially since you're back with terrific news. I was a bit worried when I sent a little note and didn't hear back. Of course I feared the worst.

I want to thank you for your help, pointing me in the right direction concerning Angel Flight. Although Angel Flight is for flights under 1,000 miles it still connected me to another site that does help with cross country flight fare. I passed this on to my friend. Haven't heard yet about when she might head to Buffalo for treatment. Paperwork you know.

That's wonderful that Ashley had a nice time in Waikiki. It helps to just let go and relax. I'm sure you took tons of pictures. Let her know we're all happy with her good news.
