Do ovarian dermoid cysts cause bleeding?

Hi last month my Dr. found a dermoid cyct on my left overy.  I've has some pain along with it and have been bleeding for about a month. (why I went to dr.)  That was 2 weeks ago and now I'm still bleeding like a period but pretty heavy.  Can they cause you to bleed like this?

I know there is about a 1 percent risk of them being cancerous (very unlikely).
If they remove only the cyst, and not an ovary, you're good to go.  Even if they remove one ovary, you will still be able to have children.

Make sure you "find a peaceful place" and then give serious thought to exactly where your pain comes from.  It really helped my doctors when they were trying to figure out what was wrong with me.  When you just tell them, "my lower right abdomen", could be all sorts of things... but if you yourself really analyze where the pain is radiating from, and can describe it well "It feels like a heavy period type of cramps" or "I feel pressure and like I have to pee all the time", it gives the doctors good ideas of where to focus their testing.

Good luck, God Bless, and all the ladies will be rooting for you!

I'm only 31 and still wanting more children.  Do you know if it will affect fertility?  I have a doctor appointment on Monday.  If I continue to have such heavy bleeding I'll go in sooner.  My cyst is pretty small but I'm still concerned about it.  Do you know if they can turn cancerous?

Hi, I was diagnosed with a dermoid cyst 8.5 x 6.5 after suddendly waking up one night and winding up in ER for a day of testing.  I am 46 and obese, pre-menopausal.  Because I don't plan on having any more children, I am scheduled for a hysterectomy.
My doctor advsd the instance of recurrence for dermoid cysts on the ovaries is relatively high.  The unusual bleeding and heavy periods are common, although could be due to many other factors.  If you have pain associated with the bleeding, you should follow up on it asap.  Pain is your body's way of getting your attention, right?  And to ignore it is unwise.
Good luck, God Bless, if you'd like to talk more about it, you can get in touch with me.

Hi
I had a dermoid cyst removed in Nov last year. Prior to diagnosis I had exceptionally heavy periods (why I went to the doc), breakthrough spotting in between periods and at least one two week period. I was concerned, like you and was told that this can be normal. My cyst ended up being benign and I've had no problems since it was removed. :- ) Hope that puts your mind at rest and good luck.
