Could it be cancer as I am over 50

I have just had an ultrasound that showed a large mass on my left ovary.  It is about 11cm.  I am 54 and I haven't had a period for just over 2 years so am post menopausal.  I am being fast tracked for admission into hospital and have had blood tests for which I am still waiting the result.  I am trying to convince myself this is just a benign cyst but because I am past the menopause I am a little worried as most benign cysts seem to affect women of child brearing age and the risk of cancer is increased with age.  Has anyone had a benign cyst after they have been through the menopause?

Hi
Thanks for your kind words.  We have very good health care where I am and yes they are caring.  I am hoping to hear soon about an appointment for the operation.

I'm almost 57 now and last year I had a 10 cm cyst removed along with my ovary and tube. It all turned out benign. I truly thought that once I hit menopause my body just went into hibernation. I was shocked to hear that I had a fat cyst in there. So although the risk of cysts being cancer are slightly higher after menopause, it's not always so.

I'm glad they're pushing the surgery sooner rather than later. A big concern is a cyst that size could rupture (ouch!) or cause the whole ovary and tube to twist (yikes!) and then you have a medical emergency. So that may be one of the big reasons they're in a hurry. Let us know how it turns out and if you have any questions. Wishing you all the best news.

Hello, I wish I could ease some of your worry, as I'm sure you already know, these answers for these tests cannot come soon enough.  I have met women who had benign cyst who were your age.  There's no reason you can't also be hopeful.  I think that there are so many scenarios, it gives us that much more to worry about.  It sounds like you are in the hands of caring professionals who also want to get you answers as quickly as possible.  I wish you the very best and hope you get good results quickly.  Let us know how you are.

Love and prayers, Angie
