HI,
A 10 cm cyst does require removal and it is better to remove both the ovaries as you have already had a hysterectomy. This decision also depends on your age. The surgery and post- op should be uneventful. However it would be better to discuss about HRT with your Doctor.
Hope this helps.

I just had my preop visit with my gyn yesterday and he recommended I keep my nonaffected ovary for the hormone benefits.  Not sure how old you are but I am 43 and have 8 years til menopause would most likely begin.  (I am having a cyst removed and probably my left ovary next week! Had my uterus out last year)

I will be 41 when I have the surgery. My left ovary is coming out, my doctor did not give me an option on this, since they cyst is in the ovary. My right ovary has cysts but not as big, I just do not want to have this done again if these cyst continue to grow. At my pre op I am to have another internal ultrasound done, I guess at that time if the cyst on the right ovary are gone then I will keep it and hope for the best. The other day I was in so much pain I had to go to the doctor, I thought the cyst had ruptured-but no luck. I was persribed pain meds but the doctor did an internal utltrsound and said it was still there. If gone at the pre op no surgery, can only hope that happens.
I was just wondering about how long to take off work, to rest and all. I dont think the surgery will be a big deal I just dont want to push it.

My story is very similar to yours. I have a complex cyst on my left ovary that has cause me pain sending me to the ER once and urgent care twice!  My gyn is going to remove the cyst and he thinks he will need to remove my left ovary too.  He told me to keep my right ovary if everything looks good in there.  I, too said I didn't want to go in another year (just had my uterus out last Nov!!) and have surgery again.  He said the odds are only 5% that the right ovary would form a cyst that could cause surgery.  Also, he said 3 days of downtime after this laparascopic procedure on Thursday. Hope this help! :o)

It sure did help, I am having the laparacopic done on a Wed. and I will be taking a week off work.
Went I had my uterus out they were going to do it laparacopic too, and they did, But had to be rushed back to surgery because the doctor had cut my bladder, sooo now I have a huge scar!! Then a couple months later they had to go back in because they did not fix they bladder right and went through the same incision!! So needless to say that is why I am so hesitant about the doctor not taking the other ovary now. And I am sooo turned around!! My cyst is on my right ovary!!!!!! My left one has a cyst on it too but not too big. What did they say the pain you were having was caused from??

Well since the worst pain is once a month they are thinking it's the cyst when I ovulate monthly. It does hurt at other times but is bearable.

Well since I dont have a period anymore, the pain isnt constant but its there. I dont have surgery tell the end of the month. I think Im going to go back to the gym this week. I stopped going when I could no longer even get on the treadmill without doubling over in pain. The pain medicine I hope works till I get this taken care of. Laying around doing much of nothing is getting me down another month, yuck.  I feel so bad , all the time so doing things has not been on my list. Its more of a sick and pain once in a while. Its bring my really bad headaches back too.

Did you have the laparscopic surgery done this month?  And what needs to be done the end of Jan?  I am confused.  I had mine on Dec 20th and my gyn was able to just drain my cyst and leave the ovary.  So I have both my ovaries still. (No uterus as it was removed last year).  He did find quite a bit of scar tissue with fluid filled pockets in it so he is pretty sure that is where my pain was coming from.  Time will tell.

On Jan. 30th I have the laparscopic surgery. Sorry to confuse you.
I do want to leave the ovarys but I am scared this will just keep on happening. I know I have a lot of scar tissue. I had to have three surgeries a couple years ago. I went in for a partial hystercotomy and they cut my bladder, had to be taken back in to repair it and thats when they really opened me up and then a month later they had to re enter the same place and fix the bladder again since they did not do it right the first time!! So my doctor now wont even touch that scar. and they are haveing a urologist there too!.

I had the same fear and wanted the right ovary taken along with the problematic left one.  I was scheduled to have that done with my gyn who took out my uterus last year.  I had mixed feelings about it and heard how awful surgical menopause can be so I got a 2nd opinion from another gyn and he said he strongly recommended I keep the right ovary because not only will menopause start immediately, the hormones that ovaries release also help your bones and heart.  He went in and was able to save both ovaries. :o)

On the 15th of this month I go in for pre op, I am having another internal ultrasound done. I am glad because I want to know if it is any bigger and how the left ovary is. I have a co-worker who had both takin out and she said she went right into menopause, and shes glad that its down and over with now. She said it was no big deal to her.
I will talk with my doctor see what he says and thinks.

I went to the doctors today, the cyst has gone done. He thinks it did rupurte that day I had to go in for the pain.
He says I know have three choices. Cuz I am still having pain, I can still have the surgery. That he would take a look and remove scar tissue, that he says that the ovary could be "stuck" to and that could be the source of pain. He could remove scar tissue and the one ovary. Or reove scar tissue and take both ovarys.
The secound option would be to take birth control for a couple a months, even though I dont have a uterus this could give the ovarys a "break" and see if that hepls with the pain. if not then have surgery.
or do nothing.
Well he said I dont have to tell him anything yet, to think about it.
I am strongly thinking of just haveing the surgery getting some scar tissue out and taking out both ovaries. I dont want to keep going to the doctor and worring about this. What do you think?

That was my source of pain come to find out. My left ovary had scar tissue attaching it to my abd wall!  The gyn was able to save that ovary and recommended it due to 10 more years of natural hormone benefit.

Well I did decide to go through with wth surgery, I dont know about the ovarys. One minute its like better keep at least one and hope he can save the other. For the hormorne benefits. Then I think of what if it attachs again, another cysy, something else.
My mother didnt have any trouble when she had her hsterctomy. My doctor said to go by that.
He said he would do what ever I wanted. And I dont know.
I wish the surgery was very soon my back is hurting so much these days.

I'm having to see my doctor tomorrow about my ovaries n what my ultrasound results are. I do know I have cysts the size of oranges but I'm keeping my faith in God that everything will be OK. I know I'm going to have surgery but I just don't know if its going to make my menopause symptoms worse because I have already had my uterus removed in 08 and if it will cause my sex drive to decrease. Because I am only 28 n I have a husband even though I know he is by my side 100% it just makes me think.

My surgery is on the 30th of this month. I think I will have the ovaries (both) removed. The last couple of weeks have been nothing but discomfort. Since they cut my bladder the first time they are haveing a urologist in the or also.
My cyst ruptured, have any of yours?
I had my uterus out 2 years ago and now Im just going to go for them takin the rest. I am 41 and I know I will go right into menopause but hope it is not that bad since no one in my family has had problems and gone into menopause by 45, I dont see why not.
I do not think it makes your sex drive decrease.
At least it best not!!

I did have a ruptured cyst when I went to the ER last March.  I heard the loss of hormones do decrease your libido.  Are you planning on taking hormone replacement?

I did go in for my laproscopic surgery today but woke up to find out there was more than cyst and my ovaries that have to be removed. Thank god I also found out that it wasn't cancerous so that's a blessing. But still nothing got removed. I also have a lot of scar tissue that the ovaries are connected to that has to also be removed. So I got to go back to the doc on the 31 of this month and go from there. I just put everything in Gods hands and keeping the faith that everything will be OK. About the hormone therapy I'm do my research and find out which will be better for me because of my age. Thanks everyone and be blessed cuz I know I am :-)

Thanks for the update.  I, too had scar tissue that had to be removed.  Be sure to ask them to put the product in there that helps prevent further scar tissue from forming (mine was called interceed). Keep us posted!

hormone therapy? well some have said it saved their lives and some dont even have to use and say all is fine.
I dont want my sex drive to go down or away. Have to ask the doctor about that.
Surgery is coming up and each day I feel more and more sick. I know its the anxity to even go back into the OR. I was hoping as the time came upon that I would feel better knowing all this will be over soon.
But I am worrried that ill wake up and I will still feel yucky.
I will ask about the scar tissue stuff, is that also what they used so your ovarys would not attach to the scar tissue?

Hi I hope ur ok I wanted to tell u that I had a burst cyst on my right ovar in oct just gone and I'm still recovering. I was rushed into hospital not knowing what was wrong, 5 hrs later I woke up and docs told me they found a massive cyst on my ovary, they cut me in 5 places and one big cut. Its all healing well but since a week after the operation iv suffered with pain in my ribs and chest on the same side. The docs don't no what it is and I have been in and out of hospital for months :-( I'm very depressed and feel very alone because no one can tell me why I'm no better and what's causing these pains. The GP is happy to give me tramadol for the pain but it makes me very sleepy and to be honest its stopped helping the pain7. I'm only 26 and got no kids and feel like iv been chopped up, patched up n just sent on m way n I really don't no when this painful nightmare will end. U say u don't want ur sex drive to go but I still have my ovaries but can't even look at myself in the mirror without crying because of all the scars on my tummy and the fact that Its caused me to have all this chest pain n pain in my ribs x

I am pretty sure your scars will get lighter and less noticeable.  I had my gallbladder out in 2006 and can barely see the scars.  I also had my uterus out last year and those scars (2 of them) are very light now. Regarding the pain, is there a way you can get a second opinion or see a pain management doctor?
