Scheduled for Surgery, Wondering What Will Be Found

So, after two ultrasounds and three months or so of symptoms, I'm getting an ovarian cyst removed by laparoscopy late next week. And, while I'm waiting for the time to pass (I really want this thing out), I'm trying to use my crystal ball to figure out what they'll find. If anyone wants to play along, feel free. :-)

My first U/S, read by a radiologist, said that there was a unilocular appearing mildly complex cyst measuring 6.6 x 4.5 x 5.4 cm, with the right ovary not visualized. The report said it was most likely an endometrioma, or a functional hemorrhagic cyst. Six weeks later, the U/S in my doctor's office (who wrote the report) said that the right ovary was visualized and enlarged, at 6.9 x 5.6 x 6.5 cm, with a 6.6 cm complex cyst inside with internal echoes.

She (my doctor) considered the cyst size unchanged, but I'm wondering about that, since the radiologist saw no ovary, and measured the mass on the right where the ovary would have been. It would seem to me that the radiologist would have measured the mass and just couldn't tell it was the ovary, which means that the mass is definitely bigger now.

I asked my doctor whether she thought it was an endometrioma, but she said no, that it might be a cystadenoma (though don't those only grow on the outside?). I'm trying decide who I should put my money on. (I'm kind of leaning toward the radiologist)

Anyway, I'm just glad it's coming out, because I've been in a lot of discomfort (hip/pelvic pain, radiating down into my thigh and up toward my ribs).

Anyone feel like sharing their opinion? I won't hold you to it. :-)

I've been lurking here for a few weeks now, and so thanks to everyone who posts, it's been really helpful.

I am so glad you let us know how you are doing.  That is great news that your doctor thinks it was an endometrioma! :)   It sounds like you are recovering well.  Best wishes for a complete, speedy recovery!

I am so glad to see your post.  I was just diagnosed with a 10cm mass on my left ovary.  I have had left lower back pain and throbbing pain on the front of my left thigh.  Normal periods just doubled over during my cycle for the month May and July.  I am scheduled to see a gyn oncologist this coming Tuesday just for safety reasons and then he will make decision on how to operate.  I had 2 blood tests done.  One gets frozen.  It seems like this ovary thing is common in women.  I have to remove the left ovary with the mass.  If you just had your surgery a few days ago, I am feeling pretty confident that everything will be ok.  I am always tired too, btw - LOL

Good luck to you and your recovery!

Just following up on my original post above to say that I had my laparoscopy on Friday--doc is pretty sure that the cyst was an endometrioma, and that she saw a couple other endo specks, but is waiting for the pathology to be sure. The cyst was adhered to the pelvic wall, and took a fair amount of "digging" to get it out. The ovary couldn't be salvaged, so that came out too (she had to enlarge one of the lap incisions somewhat to get everything out). She also put some mesh on my pelvic wall where the cyst had been adhered to hopefully prevent future adhesions.

Recovery has been relatively easy for me, though my hip/pelvis is still hurting. Tummy is sore, but not real bad and clearly improving. Pretty tired, but that might be the drugs, and I'm tired most of the time anyway. :)

They could not see my ovary either, the surgery was scheduled for the other ovary.  In my case the ovary they could not find had been hidden behind my kidney and it was prolapsed and my tube was as well, it was growing into my kidney??  The Dr. was able to remove my ovary and tube.  They had to flush out my kidney and all that to make sure it was not damaged...basically made the surgery take longer.  I felt perfectly fine afterwards.

I am 50. I have had terrible periods for last year, Went to gyn every month it seems. He examined me once and found nothing with ultrasound internal, but had trouble seeing lt ovar. That is side with all the pain every time. Two weeks later I     Went to urgent care one day for pain could not stand. Ct scan showed 5cm cyst. He watched for  2monthss.It disappeared. Again pain with periods monthly.Irreg bleeding. Had Iud for 7 months.-pain increased. We removed it. Had colonoscopy--neg. Multiple ultrasound --no repeat cyst. Kidney ultrasound --neg. I then had exp laproscopy removal lt tube and ovary, ablation for bleeding. That was 10 days ago. I hope that solves problem. The left ovary was oddly shaped ,but normal.Frayed on edges. Multiple cysts in past he thinks.Organs normal looking. For peace of mind you need the laproscopy. Hope you get your answers and feel better soon!!  I never had problems until hit 49--then it was monthly hell. The pain you can not describe to people.   Best of luck. I still having discharge post ablation and some lt lower quad pain ,but it is recent after surgery. I hope my problems will be resolved.
